5 years. Somehow the years have flown by. Opening Joe's was not easy. My family sacrificed a lot for me to follow my dream. I would like to share how Joe's got started since today is fathers day 2015. This will be a long one...
I started out as an apprentice with big dreams. I moved from franchise to corporate going on to manage a salon. I worked for a private salon and then back to a franchise. At the end of that 10 year journey i was completely burned out. The owners over promised and under delivered and i was ready to quit. I had talked to my husband Jeff a lot about what i would do differently. About how i would value the customers, not treat them just like a number or paycheck. About how the stylists and receptionists would be family and when they had an emergency it became nessasary for the rest of the family to pull together. Family had to come first. A salon had to be comfortable, life had to be able to happen without passing you by. I said we need a salon where i can go to work and have it be my career, be as fun as a hobby, as welcoming and suppotive as a family, and flexible and dependable at the same time. Never in a million years would i have thought that over 10 years my husband was actually listening to everything i was saying!
So 1 day i go into work and i call my husband crying.. .i just can't do it anymore. I've had enuf of being belittled and scolded for being creative and enjoying my job. I decide to give my notice. 2 weeks i tell them. Or however long they need to replace me. I am instantly terminated. I'm crushed. I thought i had time to tell my clients. To transition them to someone new. I go home in tears, 10 yrs of a career down the drain. Lumped into 2 bags in the backseat. I go home and jeff wont let me cry, he says let's go for a ride....the rest is history.....because he pulled up in front of the building where Joe's Barbershop is now located. This wonderful man scored a location, wrote a business plan, and found investor's all from our conversations we had at home. I thought it was a pipe dream, when someone asks you if you could have anything what would it be and then they get it for you...it's a dream come true! So this day is incredibly special for our family, not only is it the 5 year anniversary of Joe's barber shop but it is also Father's Day to one of the best fathers/husbands in the world!
