As a neurosurgeon, Dr. Alksne is interested in all aspects of neurosurgery but places a special emphasis on the care of patients suffering from trigeminal neuralgia (tic douloureux), facial tic, glossopharyngeal neuralgia, and spasmodic torticollis. Dr. Alksne is highly regarded as a compassionate physician and surgeon as well as a pioneer of innovative surgical techniques and technologies to enhance the treatment of diseases and disorders of the central nervous system. He is responsible for founding the Epilepsy Surgery Program at The University of California San Diego. He was subsequently given a Special Commendation by the Epilepsy society of San Diego County in 1992. In his capacity as dean, Dr. Alksne has proven instrumental in the establishment of the UCSD Program in Gene Therapy, which includes research, training, and clinical trials in the promising new field of gene therapy. John F. Alksne, MD, became a doctor of medicine in 1958 upon graduating from the University of Washington School of Medicine in Seattle, Washington. He spent his surgical internship year at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, and then served his residency training in neurosurgery at the University of Washington, which he completed in 1963. At the time, Dr. Alksne displayed an interest in electron microscopic neuroanatomy, which led him to apply for a one-year National Institutes of Health fellowship at the Anatomical Institute in Oslo, Norway. He trained under the tutelage of Professors Blackstad and Brodal (1963-1964). Prior to joining The University of California San Diego, Dr. Alksne was Chief of Neurosurgery at Harbor General Hospital at UCLA (1964-67) and Professor and Chair of Neurological Surgery at the Medical College of Virginia (1967-71).
