Dr Small and his team have been taking care of my spine issues over the last ten years. Dr Small’s team is amazing! His administrative assistant Maria is very helpful with navigating the paperwork involved with any procedures. His medical assistant Anita is amazing and always available to answer my questions! His PA’s Christian and Anne are so knowledgeable and are perfectly in sync with the practices of Dr Small, so they have helped me through the many less severe spine issues and with the many routine office visits I have had over the years. Once my spine issues progressed, there became a need for fusion surgery last year on my Cervical and this year on my Lumbar. Prior to the surgeries, Dr Small and Christian explained the procedures and made me feel completely comfortable with the choice of surgery. Post-op, they were there to make sure I was healing properly. Both surgeries were an overwhelming success! I have no pain and have returned to my regular physical activities and active lifestyle. I tell everyone about the amazing care this spine team has provided to me! They are simply the best team around!!!
So it’s been since March, 2021 when this very nice Dr Small fused 2 L discs with stenosis. It’s a shame the hospital he chooses to go to Advent Carrolwood, Tampa. They scrubbed floors after three days, changed my gown only when his rude& ignorant PA ? Chris Cruz yanked a drain tube from me without placing bandage!!! I bled all over, not to mention his rudeness at office visit. Then I slipped out of a recliner in my sleep post surgery cried from pain only to be told off by another idiot tech with a man bun, ‘Geo’ who, as I was crying, stuck his finger in face yelling that I ‘should have called a nurse! ????I chased him out called security to tell them I fear him, to keep him out of my room; leg pumping machines failed three times, as did vitals machines; I walked as much as I could fearing blood clots, so Shannon a nurse told me she only had 5 minutes to walk me because she was on 13 hr shift??? The charge nurse ‘Karen ‘ was a true Karen , she knows why… for two days my room was out of towels washcloths toilet paper so the poor nice nurses were running up napkins for me!!!!!? They scrubbed floors after THREE days; some man rushed into my room scared me at his speed, said he’s from respiratory and got me to wear this- he proceeds to push something in my nose- I grabbed his hand told him to leave ! I learned he went to wrong room anyway!! There were beautiful nurses & staff as well as too many losers I couldn’t wait to get out. I learned after from RN friends & neighbors how they hate that hospital , have many patients who left there. I told Dr Small that that hospital does not reflect him also his associate was snyde to me when he came in my room to check on me as if my complaints were fake. I was great for nine months after surgery then my leg swoll, I went Dr Pigeon ; he said Dr Small did a good job but that he would’ve done ‘two more discs higher as well & scheduled me for surgery . I was upset so Dr pigeon’s scheduler Beth told me I could Sue Dr Small all I had to do was ask my insurance company what kind of surgery he asked for & what they covered , etc. I was stunned as I liked Dr Small but the pain I was in, thought Id pursue after all. So I called Sharecare who sent me a box full! I told Beth I can’t carry them to office for her to look through them as she requested then she told me forget it!? This is crazy on top of it all as Small is in sane group as Pigeon!!! So I had to postpone surgery as I had another health issue to clear , was told by Beth to call when I was ok. I did; only to receive a letter saying I didn’t trust Dr Pigeon as I did not like the ‘nurse navigator, J Lee who is not ethical at all as. a ‘nurse navigator!!! also that I refused mri. Dr Pigeon himself told me it’s ok as many won’t take it. I told him Id be glad to go to Sarasota to an open one .Beth knew this. I was told that Small said I had issues w the hospital!!? I can’t keep up w this craziness ! My brother is a world class surgeon who would never work in a horrid hospital as well as treat his patients poorly of listen to hearsay. So that Pigeon, Small, all those who have verified histories of not only tolerating the above but of listening to hearsay , do not deserve to touch me or my insurance which pays you well. As a teacher , if I listened to hearsay I’d be fired or always miserable. For these doctors to dismiss a vulnerable kindly patient in so much pain is reprehensible . For Pigeon to listen to his assistant Beth & J Lee after she / they told me different stories , then dismiss me as a patient because I need to ‘trust’ him!!!? You’re all in need of ethical and critical thinking skillls . Seriously, as an established patient, Pigeon should have gotten us all together face on to discuss all of it!!! But hey, they deserve one another and I’m now fred of this ego web ! None of you deserves me , and thank God there’s always someone better at your feet of whom I learned of also today the same day I’m learned I’m not returning to Pigeon Lee, or Beth. This is why I waited so long yo post on Small. I knew he was a dismissive liar
Dr John Small and his team are amazing! They have given me my life back! I had severe pain with every step I took, wasn't able to participate with family & friends, just had to sit and watch ... I was miserable and in terrible pain ... but the minute I got up out of the bed for the first time after surgery fusion of F4 & F5 I could feel the difference ... no pain! Low back, hips and legs ... pain free!!! Of course I had surgery pain but it was nothing compared to what I had been dealing with for over 2 years! I can't thank Dr Small and his team enough for the wonderful care I've received! He is kind, patient, considerate and knowledgeable plus has a good sense of humor : I've had a great experience and would like to shout it from the roof tops! I am walking all over my neighborhood without pain and only 8 weeks out from surgery! THANK YOU Dr Small & staff
Dr John Small is the BEST choice to regain a functional life. He was able to relieve multilevel horrorific pain in my Lspine with Cages, Rods. I later lost the use of my right arm due to Spinal Cord Compression. He relieved the multilevel Cord Compression and I regained the use of my dominate arm and hand and relieved pain in my left arm. Thank You Dr Small!!!
I wish I could tell you how Dr Small is. We have had three appointments cancelled within three days of seeing him. Our very first appointment with him was the PA Cruz. Very nice but suggested for us to make an appointment to see Dr Small. It has been over a year and again our appointment was cancelled on September 17th for an appointment on the 21st. Guess because of my husbands age he is not important enough to see.
He is fantastic with the knife, office wait times are almost always 45 minutes late but its a small price to pay for a fantastic surgeon.
I showed up for my visit and they had no record of my appointment. After going through 2 rounds of questions and answers the very nice young front desk person was embarrassed and did what she could to get me on the schedule. Finally after 30 min I was told I am approved to see the Dr but would have to wait another 30 min. Within a minute I was then told it would be at least another hour and a half. I walked out. All in all, I’m thankful that I didn’t see this doctor because if he runs his back office, scheduling, and management this poorly, I can only imagine what he would do to me before, during, and after a procedure. Scary.
I don't recommend this business, due to their most confusing and utterly chaotic billing system. It's not because Dr. Small is not the best surgeon you will ever meet. He is, and on that account, I do recommend him; however, the multitude of bills that are sent to the patient following surgery is enormous. Why? Because Dr. Small does not care who he calls into the surgery room with him, whether they are on Blue Cross' list of preferred providers or not. Therefore, be aware, ANYBODY could simply walk into that suite and be permitted to charge you for "care" that is not in any way associated with your plan. At this point, I am still fighting a bill of over $5200 that I never should have received had Dr. Small done his homework and permitted only those listed in Blue Cross' preferred providers. Getting down to who it is that is owed is a major job, as there is no one within Blue Cross, nor within Small's office, to assist you in getting the listing of medical professionals who they allowed enter your case, nor do they know what the other Blue Cross offices are doing or have done. This is a living nightmare, this entire recuperation process is filled with bill upon bill and nobody knows from whom or why. _______________________________________________________ Update regarding services at the Florida Orthopedic Institute of Telecom Pkwy. This incident occurred this morning, Sept. 21, 2019 and involves my brother, Dennis. He has been in great pain from his waist to his feet for months now. Three years ago he had surgery performed on his lumbar due to stenosis by Dr. Small and has been asking for a consult for the past few weeks. An appt. was scheduled for the 30th of this month, but Dennis is in excruciating pain and felt he had to see someone sooner. A staff member Jenna, talked to Dennis over the phone yesterday, and Dennis insists she told him that both she and Christopher would meet with Dennis to talk about the results of his three recent MRIs, and that they would be at the facility this morning at 7 am. We arrived in the parking lot at 6:30 am and waited until 7 am, hit the #002 code on the front door to be let in and no one answered. Cars were being driven behind the building so we followed one to the rear and was told by the driver that often no one responds to calls made on the system at the front door and that she would let us in. We drove to the front, were let in, but when we got to the MRI section of the facility neither Jenna nor Chris were there to see Dennis, and the women in charge of checking in patients on that floor looked on the computer to see if any notes regarding today's special visit was placed in the system. THERE WAS NOTHING! No one knew how to get in touch with Jenna to ask her why she was not there. After declaring my great disappointment and overall dissatisfaction with their customer service I knew nothing could be done for Dennis, so we left. One of the women staff said she would write a note describing today's incident for Jenna and Chris to read in, perhaps on Monday. Why would a staff member set up a time for a patient to be at Telecom then not show up or put the information in the system? What sort of customer service does this place have operating? My brother insists both he and his wife heard Jenna tell Dennis he should be at the Telecom facility this morning at 7 am and no one was there to see him.
Dr. John Small helped me with a Back and Spine problem I had from a terrible car accident where I could not function on a daily basis. I was trembling and shaking uncontrollably all the time. I had been to several doctors who thought I was kidding and just wanted drugs. I went and got my own MRI's and brought them to Dr. Small. Once he saw the MRI's, he said you need surgery now and that he was sorry none of the other Doctors believed me that I was in a lot of pain. To make a long story short, he did spine surgery 3 weeks later in May 2014 on my L5 and S1 because the tissue had come out of between those vertebrae. To this day I can walk normal and I have my life back. I could not thank Dr. John Small enough for saving my back and life. Thank God for great Physicians like Dr. John Small. God Bless you Dr. John Small. Thank you, Robert Vincent Ortiz, Riverview, Florida.
I have been trying to see Dr.Small since May of this year. I have been to his office 3 times after driving over 2 hours 1 way and have not seen him yet.each time I saw a physician assist who just ordered unnecessary test just to justify wasting my time. I am trying 1 last time and if I do not see him I will report him for insurance fraud and just scamming people.l
