My family needed dinner in this town because we had a long drive ahead of us. It looked like we had two options. We chose this restaurant. The six of us ordered the same huckleberry meat loaf meal which is listed as an individual plate on the menu. However, for my two small kids to share one adult meal, there was a sharing surcharge of $5. For the price, I thought the quantity would be larger, but the waiter told me while I was ordering that the quantity per plate was small. Communication with the waiter was difficult and confusing. I understand the words he said, but it didn't always make sense and the conversation went in circles. After he left, my kids told me he was spitting on them as he talked. The soup and huckleberry meat loaf was great. We ate it in the presence of a black bear. There are two bears in the dining room, both shot by the owner. Edit: I'm glad the owner responded. It helps my review be even more valuable for the readers.
This is a review for the restaurant, not the hotel. I can't get Google to distinguish the difference. The food here was phenomenal. Some of our family had their own meals, while others got family-style and it was all delicious! The atmosphere was also charming, fun, and kitschy. We would definitely return on our next trip to Glacier.
We did not camp but are at the restaurant which was fabulous! I had the Huckleberry BBQ pork! Served with coleslaw, mash potatoes and beef barley soup this meal was not only filling but delicious!! Fast friendly service and great food make this hidden gem a must visit for lunch or dinner after visiting Glacier National Park St. Mary! Food & drinks: We ate at the restaurant and didn not stay in the RV park.
I just went to the restaurant for lunch a couple times and the food and service was pretty outstanding. Very western/Glacier look to it . Had the thimbleberry cheesecake for desert and it was pretty phenomenal. Never heard of it before so I had to try it and glad I did. I drove through the RV Park and the sites looked very close together but the view was awesome...
We were a staying at campground and decided to eat at the cafe. VERY GLAD we did! Excellent meal. Service was top notch. Owner was present. Ordered the “special “. Homemade turkey meal. GREAT. Save room for pie. We ordered three types - strawberry rhubarb, apple, and thimble berry cheesecake. All delicious. Funky “hometown”atmosphere with older memorabilia. Would do again. Ask server for their recommendations and “go with it”. Remember. You are NOT in Chicago or NYC thank God. You are in Montana. Enjoy!!
We went for dinner after reading it was one of the best restaurants in the area not that there are a lot of options. Upon entering I was pleased with the decor and atmosphere of the restaurant. It had a country, small town look decorated with antiques and old family photos. We were seated about 15 minutes after arriving and were given a pitcher of “water”. Whatever was in that pitcher was brown and I didn’t notice it until already after taking a drink. The server never was able to tell us what I had ingested. We ordered, the food came, and it was mediocre at best. We had a turkey sandwich and burger. Neither were very good. While eating I watched a server clean a table with two unused water cups on it. The cups, turned upside down were left on the table as the table was sprayed with cleaner and wiped off. Then slide to another area of the cleaner coated table and sprayed again. Those cups were never removed or replaced. The next family would be drinking disinfectant cleaner. I would not recommend going and I will not be returning. Having food that is just okay is one thing, but compromising the health and safety of patrons is unacceptable!
Had dinner @ Johnson's last night. Really good food.....husband and I had the special, Pork Tinderloin with Huckleberry sauce served family style. So good and tender. The meal came with coleslaw, beef and barley soup, home made bread and butter, mashed potatoes and gravy. This meal was so good. Could hear 2 other tables around us talking about how good their meals were too and how happy they were that they had come to Johnson's. We plan on going back before we leave the area.
DO. NOT. EAT. HERE. This place is a joke. The food is mediocre, but the business practice is just plain ridiculous! First of all, if you want to split a meal they charge you an additional $5, and they try to up sell you on ordering more food to avoid the meal splitting fee. As I ate there, I saw them do this to two other couples, one which was an elderly couple that didn't really understand the process and was swindled into ordering more food to "save on being charged the fee". Their hamburgers come with the standard side of soup. Yes, soup. Do you want the normal side of fries with your burger? That'll be and additional $4 fee for replacing a soup with fries. Seriously!?! We decided to order a slice of huckleberry pie to avoid the splitting fee, when the server brought it out it looked disgusting. She asked if we wanted her to microwave it again. Again!?! One other server walked by and jokingly said they just use grape jam for the pie filling, but I actually do believe him after tasting it. The pie crust was oily and poorly made. it seems that the pie had been warmed over many times. Though, I swear the pie of the slice of pie on the menu said $5.50, when they brought the bill it said it was $16. $16 for a underwhelming slice of pie, no joke. I stopped the server and told her I thought there was a mistake and we got charged for a whole pie instead of the slice. She snarkly pffft'd at me, and said the berries are handpicked. At the end of the meal we paid $55 for one greasy bland hamburger, decent fries, and a incredibly over priced slice of so-called huckleberry pie. Would never eat here again, and would advise everyone to avoid this place.
Didn’t stay with them, but tried to dine with them. Was told to write our names on a sheet and we’d be called when we were next. After 15 minutes of waiting I asked one of the servers if there was anything else we needed to do, or if he knew how long the wait would be. He looked at me like he couldn’t believe I’d asked him and told me it’d be quite a while, then walked off and said nothing else. Nobody else ever greeted us or said anything. We left about 10 minutes later after refusing to be greeted or served by anyone. We instead went to the open cafe just down the road where all the staff was very friendly and the food was amazing. Food & drinks: Staff are rude and dismissive.
Family of 5 couldn't even sit together. Supposedly there were no tables big enough for us. Even though there were larger groups that were able to be seated together and some how they made it work for them. The owner said if we wanted to wait to sit together it would probably be another 30 plus minutes because the hippies as he called them were now ordering dessert. We unfortunately had to eat 3 at one table, 2 at another. The signage was poor for the daily special of brisket . It didn't say family style meal. When we ordered, we thought we were all getting an individual meal. We soon realized that was not the case as it was being served. This was our first ever family style meal which should have been fun but try sharing a family meal between 2 tables. So disappointing!! The attitude, chewy brisket, and the over priced meal was ridiculous!!! Why we stayed after not being able to sit together and the rudeness is a question we will continue to ask ourselves. I reached out to the manager before posting this review. He responded in not the manner I would have expected. I am not so sure what makes this place famous. I wish I would have read the reviews before eating here. Obviously I am not alone in the opinion of this restaurant.
