Description

What You Need to Know About My Approach

My training and work as a guide is designed to promote client-directed self-healing and is only partially influenced by the skills and techniques I bring as a trained professional to the therapist-client relationship. The transformational work I offer is actually more powerfully impacted by the quality of the relationship that develops between myself and my clients. Therefore, along with my toolbox of techniques, approaches and depth of insight, I bring powerfully honed interpersonal skills to my therapeutic relationships that serve to forge a foundational container of deep trust and safety necessary for your desired personal changes to occur.

This, combined with my deep knowledge and faith in your innate capacity for self-healing forms the basis of the work we do together.

My life’s passion has been to integrate knowledge of holistic, transpersonal and eco-psychologies with an intimate understanding of human being’s interconnection with all of life. In other words, in my work with the people I help, I naturally operate from the assumption that when a person comes to me for help complaining of a problem in his or her life, I believe it’s important to look at not only that person’s family system (including possible early life traumatic experiences), but to also consider their presenting troubles and challenges in the context of the cultural and environmental system that they have grown up in, not just the family system.

It’s virtually impossible to escape the traumatic impacts of living in a world culture that is so deeply pathological, dysfunctional, polluted and on the verge of destroying itself, and it would be neglectful not to consider these as critical elements in the process of personal growth and healing.

Because each individual life is inextricably interconnected with and dependent upon the healthy functioning of the systems they exist within, I treat mental, emotional and spiritual challenges from this broader holistic vantage point.

If you read this and the top list (below) gels with you and you don’t resonate so much with the bottom list, then we should talk.

We will work incredibly well together and I can help you see amazing results if…

- You feel stuck, but trust that you have masses of untapped potential lying beneath the surface
- You don’t necessarily know exactly what it is you want or maybe can’t quite articulate it yet, but you’re committed to making whatever it is happen
- You want to move forward while also gaining insight into the deeper workings of your life
- You genuinely want to know what makes you tick and how to motivate yourself
- You really, truly get that there’s more to life than making money, and that you’re open to the possibility of discovering that genuine happiness is born of both desire and action to serve and help others rather than just yourself
- You’re willing and desiring to make the changes necessary to reach your goals
- You’re hungry for change, healing and growth
- You’re interested in learning about yourself from a truly holistic perspective
- You’re keen to learn and eager to try new things out
- You’re not afraid of your fear of seeing reality for what it is.

We probably won’t be a great fit if…

- You have serious commitment issues
- You’re looking for a silver bullet or to have someone magically take your pain away
- You’re not interested in understanding your life from a holistic perspective
- You’re afraid of your fear of seeing reality for what it is.

Does the first list sound like you?

If so, excellent. I welcome the opportunity to converse with you by phone or email to answer your questions and get acquainted in advance of formal work. I offer a free 30-minute initial consultation.

Jonathan and I have been friends and colleagues for more than twenty-five years. Notably, we have participated in a study of Internal Family Systems Therapy IFS together. Through our friendship and our professional engagement, I have known Jonathan to be a sensitive and attuned practitioner who brings skill, compassion, and depth of insight into his work. I highly recommend Jonathan as someone who will offer sound and helpful guidance to people who are in a difficult or painful moment in their lives and are seeking meaning and understanding.
Jonathan has been a colleague and creative collaborator for decades, and he is one of the most sensitive, caring men I have met. He and I trained as creative arts therapists together, and I would absolutely trust him to be my own therapist. A wonderful listener, supportive witness, and deep soul—unafraid to be present to life's challenges, to deep feelings including grief, fear, and shame, and to the human shadow in all its manifestations.
I have known Jonathan personally and professionally for nearly 20 years and I have always been impressed by the depth of his care and curiosity about the complexity of human relationships and gateway to growth they provide. I have great trust in not just his level of commitment to the people he serves, but his sincere love of his work. If you are looking for a gifted counselor and guide, I highly recommend Jonathan!
As Jonathan’s colleague and longtime friend, I feel inspired by his commitment to his own learning and growth as well as his passion for his work as a therapist. Through his depth of insight into the workings of the mind, emotions, and addictive patterns of thinking, he is able to guide his clients towards fulfillment and peace of mind. I highly recommend him for anyone who is interested in a holistic approach to moving through life’s challenges.
Jonathan deeply cares about the world and the people in it. In his Coming Home to Grief group in 2016, I felt soothed and held by his calming, caring presence. In the safe space he created for us, I was able to open up to feelings of grief my own and others' in a new way. Weaving in the expressive arts is a brilliant way to get into the nitty gritty of grief, and Jonathan facilitates these processes with heart and skill. I especially felt engaged by the work with the sand tray with Jonathan as my witness: his strong-hearted, sensitive and grounded presence helped me to unblock a deep well of grief, and the flow continued through the entire eight-week session. Jonathan's support was tangible and ever-present. As a colleague, I have respected the ways in which Jonathan has evolved as a therapist. In my most recent connection with Jonathan, he helped me reframe a seemingly insurmountable problem in such a way that completely turned my thought process around. I was about to give up on something, and Jonathan offered up what felt like a magical piece of truth that shifted my whole perspective on my problem and instilled a sense of confidence I needed to move through the obstacle with grace and trust. I can't fully explain what it is that Jonathan does so well, it's just something to be experienced. I highly recommend Jonathan as a therapist. Kristin Ettinger, MSW, LCSW
I've known Jonathan for 6 years and have interacted with him in a variety of contexts. I've always been impressed with his capacity to listen in a non-judgmental, compassionate way. Jonathan can hold space equally well for despair and joy, shadow and beauty. He fosters a safe, inclusive environment in one-on-one as well as group interactions. I always feel grounded after being in his presence.
Jonathon definitely has helped in just the short while I have been working with him. He is compassionate and has a lot of knowledge and insight into the human *spirit* and mind
I saw Jonathan for about 4 -5 months weekly several years ago, when I was having difficulties relating to my grown daughter. When we began, the idea was that my daughter and I would meet together with him. However, this changed and I found myself faced with my own hindrances to an improved relationship. With Jonathan, each session was routinely organized, beginning with a sense of being present, and ending with a sense of fulfillment and calm. I found these sessions well worth the time and I looked forward to them. Jonathan was skillful in his methods of having me play out some of the situations I brought to attention. These helped me see myself in a more acceptable light, especially as a mother. I heartily recommend him as a skillful, attentive, and sensitive therapist.
I am deeply grateful to have found Jonathan. He takes his work very seriously, and is not only a great therapist but really cares about the work his patients are doing. His many years of experience and compassionate heart make him an effective catalyst in the process of personal transformation. Expect to move steadily along the path to greater happiness and a realization of value and purpose in your life!
A friend of mine found the Coming Home to Grief group online. I was attracted by the Expressive Arts approach, and that was a helpful way to focus the enormous energy that grief was taking in my life. After the sudden, traumatic death of my soul-mate there was no way that ordinary everyday relationships and spaces could feel emotionally safe for me. Jonathan created a group structure where everyone had time to be heard and supported, and be met wherever we happened to be. There was no judging or advising, just respectful listening that honored each of us in our particular life story. This will be a long process for me and it is not over or solved. But I needed a supportive place to focus on the devastation and its aftermath, and I got it in Jonathan’s group.
