Dear Potential Explorer Candidate:
I would like to take this opportunity to tell you about the Joplin Police Explorers. This is a very exciting and rewarding program that is offered by the Joplin Police Department in conjunction with the Boy Scouts of America. It is designed for area youth between the ages of 15 and 20 who may be interested in future careers in law enforcement.
I realize that at your age there are countless possibilities for what you can do with your life and that sometimes that decision can be difficult. If you have ever considered a law enforcement related career then this may be something you should consider. It is a great opportunity to meet others with the same interests as you and to learn a lot about police work.
As a member of our post, you will receive training in all aspects of law enforcement. We train extensively in car stops, building searches, DWI enforcement, firearms, defensive tactics, and much, much more. We offer lots of hands on training for our Explorers and try to get them as much “in the field” experience as possible.
In addition to all of this training, we go canoeing, camping, have cookouts, go paintballing, and lots of other fun activities. This group is run by its members and I just organize the activities they want to participate in.
We attend the National Law Enforcement Explorer Conference every other year. This is an event where Explorer Posts from across the nation get together and compete in all areas of law enforcement. This event is held in different locations across the nation for 1 week of the summer. Some of the states we have attended conferences in are Colorado, Arizona, Georgia, and South Carolina.
In the years that there is not a Conference to attend, there are the National Law Enforcement Explorer Academies which are in Washington DC and instructed by the FBI and the DEA. These are free to those who qualify.
The Explorers also assist the community in lots of ways. Explorers help with traffic direction and crowd control at all major events in the area. Some the events that we have helped with include; Parades, 4th of July celebrations, mining days, DWI checkpoints, and many, many more.
There are several college scholarships and grants available through the Explorers and it is an excellent resume builder for the future. We meet every Thursday from 6:00 to 9:00 PM at the Joplin Police Department (303 E. 3rd).
