J.P.Wood MAA is a Premier martial arts school that uses the methods of how you learn, to maximize your experience in each and every class. Our classes consist of warmup and stretching to develop your flexibility and prevent injury. You will participate in exercises to develop stamina and strength and agility, that will help you feel stronger and healthier. You will learn and practice a variety of techniques and drills that will increase your martial arts skills and self defense abilities.

The lesson plans grandmaster Wood writes each week for the instructors and students offers variety for fun and excitement yet a incorporates a step by step plan for student progress and a system built for your successful martial arts experience.

My son is 9 and has been going to JP Wood Martial Arts American since he was 5. Before that, he was enrolled in Park District classes led by Mrs. Wood. The Woods are very competent and patient instructors. My son has never NOT wanted to go to class. He always has a great time learning Taekwondo at JP Wood. One of the best advantages to JP Wood is that they are not only teaching Taekwondo techniques and skills, they are teaching real human values that my son can take with him as he grows. They are teaching perseverance, respect, leadership, and creativity. Their testing method also teaches each student to be able to stand up in front a crowd without being nervous or having stage fright. My son is very happy with JP Wood and is excited to go to class to continue learning the Martial Art of Taekwondo. I am very happy to see the confidence that he has achieved at JP Wood Martial Arts America.
JP Wood is a great place to learn Taekwondo, work out, help your kids find their inner strength and have some fun. The Masters are very knowledgable and patient making this place a great place for the entire family. Thank you for helping us achieve our black belt goals.
We were first introduced to JP Wood Martial Arts America when our son, Renzo, was still a toddler. We signed him up in the Palatine Park District's "Intro to Tae Kwon Do" program, which was run by Mrs. Wood. Fast Forward 9 years hence...Renzo is now a blackbelt and has started going to Gumdo classes. Not to mention, I myself has started my TKD journey. JP Wood Martial Arts not only teaches TKD and other martial arts, they also teach the students good values like respect, and hard work. The entire school, teachers and students, are always encouraged to help one another in class, which builds a sense of community. We are proud to say that JP Wood Martial Arts has been and will always be a positive experience for our family, and is a great asset to the community.
Met with and spent time with Master Wood to see if Koryo Gumdo was right for me based on age and physical limitations. When I walked out I knew this was the best place for me to train. A class family and meticulous studio.
J.P. Wood Martial Arts is a fantastic experience. They offer a wide variety of class options for a range of ages. The instruction is awesome, and communication is clear. There are a number of other fun activities camps and community outreach. They also focus on character development. We LOVE Mr. and Mrs. Wood and their team. Would highly recommend.
Our sons have been students of JP Wood Martial Arts for a long time. Originally they wanted to try martial arts lessons for fun. But they loved it after joining JP Wood and are continuing through the belt ranks. It is a great place for techniques and work outs. They have a good support structure with individual attention. They work with each student about their shortcomings and help to move to the next level. It is a very positive environment. Our sons absolutely love to go there.
My son has been attending J P Wood Martial Arts America for about 18 months and it has been a fantastic experience. I was never involved with martial arts as a child and never had a favorable opinion of it, but Grand Master John P. Wood and his team have been fantastic. I am truly impressed by the level of attention they give each student and their ability to work with challenging youth, whether because they are timid or because of attention issues. As you would expect, self-discipline is part of the program, but the staff is never so strict that it is a turn-off to parent or child. While they certainly make clear what the behavior and expectations are, they always work with students in an age-appropriate way. The extras are fantastic, as well: Halloween party for the kids, holiday party for families, summer cook-out and outdoor classes, just to name a few. J P Wood Martial Arts America has definitely made a positive impression on me and has made a world of difference in my son's coordination, attention, confidence, and fitness.

JP Woods is owned and operated by people who have a real passion for their work, and it shows. They care about their students in a holistic way that involves a whole-life approach that encourages the kids to excel not just in martial arts, but in all their undertakings. The classes are well-balanced between fun and hard work, their schedule provides lots of opportunities for busy families to find time to participate, and they offer lots of variety in both classes and extra-curricular activities. We moved to Palatine last year and found JP Wood Martial Arts America through a friend of my son's, a black belt. We joined based on his recommendation and it has been a great journey. We owe him! JP Wood has provided a foundation that has facilitated a successful transition to a new community. My son has challenged himself as he never would have before and made friends and had fun. The instructors know every student and work 24/7 to help them succeed. They offer a balance of discipline and understanding that leads to success. They understand how to connect with students and challenge them to succeed.
Excellent School! My son has been taken classes with Master Wood since age 3. He has continued to be motivated and it is something he looks forward every week. At JP Woods you not only learn about Martial Arts, you will also learn about fitness, character and respect. They know how to make Tae Kwon Do fun while you’re learning the skills.
