JW Marriott Grand Rapids was the first JW Marriott Hotel in the Midwest. It is themed based on Grand Rapids's sister cities: Omihachiman, Japan; Bielsko-Biala, Poland; Perugia, Italy; Ga District, Ghana; and Zapopan, Mexico. When the hotel was first opened, Amway Hotel Corporation hired photographer Dan Watts to travel to each of the sister cities and photograph them for the property. The JW Marriotts are the second highest ranking hotels in the Marriott district. Each floor of the hotel features photography from one of the cities and is unique to that floor. The cities repeat themselves up the 23 floors. This is the sixth tallest building in Grand Rapids.Opening in September 2007, the property was honored with "2007 Opening of The Year" for the Marriott brand.

This is a great JW hotel in the heart of Grand Rapids. The rooms could be a bit larger, but they were as expected in a city. We were blown away by the service! Everyone was friendly and super helpful as we've never been to Grand Rapids before. I have to really call out a special thank you to the staff in the concierge lounge. They were truly the nicest, friendliest and most helpful people we've ever met! The valets and front desk staff were great also. What a great experience!!!
WOW. We booked this hotel to be our getting ready/first look location for our wedding day on October 1, 2022. This is THE nicest hotel I've ever stayed at. They were SO accommodating and ready to help. All of the staff was super friendly and eager to assist. The only downside was how busy the check in area got and how congested the lobby would get because of it. The key cards to travel between rooms got a little hectic for our vendors as well I recommend getting your vendors their own keys if the front desk will allow! We had a blast here and the suite we stayed in was breathtaking. The lighting in the suite was perfect since it's all windows! We had our first look on the rooftop of the parking garage that was completely dead on the Saturday we attempted it! It gave the perfect lighting/skyline view of the city and some of our family members staying at the hotel got to watch from their hotel rooms. Can't recommend this place enough for those looking to splurge on a special occasion!
The location of this hotel is unmatched. The lobby and staff are so inviting and welcoming. While the bathrooms are updated and spa like, the furniture and decor in the rooms is outdated. There were stains on the chaise and the bed was way too firm. The television was old and difficult to control. For the price, you get a great bathroom and great surrounding amenities like live music in the lobby and an incredible view of the Grand River.
Check in was a bit slow but really not an issue otherwise. The hotel is really nice and the staff are friendly and helpful. The rooms are quite nice with luxurious bathrooms. The bed was on the firmer side but that didn’t bother us. The club lounge was quite nice as well if you have access.
Had a wonderful experience staying at this hotel, the rooms were beautiful and had phenomenal views of the river and city. With a prime location right in the middle of downtown close to many of GR's best attractions and the highway, this is the perfect place to stay for those wanting a higher end experience whilst exploring the best of Grand Rapids, or those who are trying to make a quick trip and could use the ease of access of the hotel's location and wonderful valet service. Walkability: Very close to many of GR's best attractions, including the grand river, Rosa parks circle, the grand rapids art museum, 20 Monroe live, the van Andel arena, and the devos place and devos performance hall, to name simply a few. Food & drinks: The jdek at Margaux serves a great breakfast. Couldn't personally attest to their dinner or bar but the friends we travelled with spoke very highly of it! Noteworthy details: Close to many prime time GR locations, amazing views of the city, and has a wonderful restaurant and beautiful bar on the first floor.
My Husband and I stayed here on our wedding night and We used JW for our room blocks for our wedding. they were so accommodating! I wish I got the receptionist's name but on 8/13/22 our bridal party came to the hotel after our reception and we were all soaked from the rain and just wanting to sit and chat while we waited for pizza to be delivered. while we sat in the lobby the receptionist brought us cold waters and plates and napkins for us to use! these little gestures went a long way! THANK YOU!
The staff and service are excellent but that's the best part about this very expensive hotel. We stayed in rm 1709 which had the hardest, most uncomfortable mattress I've ever slept on. The pillows are oddly shaped long narrow rectangles that appears fluffy but flatten the moment your head hits them. There is minimal counter space in the bathroom. The view of Rosa Parks ice rink was nice with the holiday lights. Signage throughout is poor - especially to find your way to the parking garage. The elevator for it doesn't mention it until you're inside. The check in area is very congested with tables and decor making it more cluttered so you have no option but to squeeze through the line of people waiting to check in if you need to pass thru. Thankfully our hosts had a military discount so we didn't pay full price. The room was not worth the regular rate over $250. Also, we were told at check in that the parking garage was free - you just use your room key to exit and drop them in the box. Our hosts didn't get so lucky - they called and asked how much parking vs valet was and since valet was only $4 more than the garage they opted for valet. More transparency to all guests would be nice.
This hotel is the top of the line in the Marriott chain and holds itself to those standards. The service and knowledge level if the staff is fitting with these expectations! No complaints about being short staffed or limits to service, valet, restaurant, housekeeping, etc! Thank you for another great stay. See yoy soon!!Rooms: 5/5
The JW Marriott Grand Rapids is understaffed in the restaurant, front desk, and housekeeping. We understand the staffing issues facing many businesses. We could be patient with the long line to check-in, as we could with the shortage of servers in the restaurant. What was not acceptable was the hotel not informing us there was no housekeeping over the weekend…none. We came back from a long day out and were surprised our room was untouched. We don’t’ need fresh sheets, the bed made and, typically don’t need fresh towels. We are happy to reuse to be environmentally conscientious. However, my wife had been unwell when we checked-in and when she showered the next morning. Both used bath towels were put in the tub to make it obvious we needed clean ones. When we returned to our room to discover it untouched, we assumed a simple oversight by housekeeping. When I called the Guest Service # it was only then we were informed of no weekend housekeeping. I asked for two bath towels. I was informed that my reservation confirmation should have stated no weekend housekeeping and that the front desk should have informed me at check-in. It did not and they did not. I reviewed all 3 email communications from the hotel and nothing was mentioned. Interestingly, it did mention all the efforts they were making to make the hotel extra clean with regards to current epidemics. I then called the front desk and asked for a manger. None was available but I did receive a call back from a very pleasant gentleman. He stated I should have been informed, he noted the staffing shortage issues had been very challenging and he also noted that the hotel had decided to open again back in November even though they knew they were understaffed. I told him I felt misled by the hotel. We should have been informed. I then asked if I was being charged the same rate for no-service days as I was for days with service. He told me I was. I shared that was unethical. He replied those issues were not within his authority to influence. I asked if he would please have the General Manager call me. He shared he could only tell her assistant to convey the request to the GM. A hint that the GM is insulated from most staff and certainly from guest issues. He did give me the email address for the GM. I wrote her an email expressing that my wife and I felt misled by the hotel and that the charging us full rate regardless of no-service or partial/full service was unethical and should be reviewed and changed. I did not receive a return phone call. I did not receive a reply to my email. I strongly recommend you stay away from the JW Marriott Grand Rapids for a few months. Although some of the staff we met were pleasant and professional, it is obvious the GM and perhaps even other management staff are giving first, second, and third priority to the almighty dollar and doing so to the detriment of their guests.
I don’t generally write reviews but I was so unbelievably impressed with the service we received on our stay I had to. We were only there for a night but from the front desk to the valet team I cant thank them enough. We were traveling with our 16 month old and a little nervous for his first hotel stay. We were made to feel so comfortable with him and everyone went above and beyond.
