About

With over 30 years of practice in individual, family and marriage therapy, I assist clients in finding practical solutions to daily life situations.

Description

With 30 years clinical and administrative experience, I have been a South Haven, Michigan-based private practice psychotherapist (LMSW) since 2011, specializing in individual, family, and marriage therapy with interest in substance abuse, and sexual survivors' trauma treatment, in addition to general psychiatric conditions. As a therapist and/or administrator of non-profit, proprietary, community-based, and hospital-based mental health programs which offered both group and individual therapy, I also have directed a hospital-based Employee Assistance Program, in addition to supervising students in internship. In addition, I have more than 30 years in administrative and clinical experience.

Let me tell you more about my training and my approach to therapy:

Education and Training

I was graduated from Randolph-Macon Woman’s College with a double major: a B.A. in Philosophy and B.A. with Honors in English, followed by a Masters in Public Health (with a specialty in Health Administration) from the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill, and a Masters in Social Work from the University of South Carolina. In Michigan, I am a Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW) and in North Carolina, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW). A member of the National Association of Social Workers, I have special training in Crisis Debriefing (Critical Incident Stress Management–or CISM).

Specialties

Though I have training in critical incident stress debriefing, I also have worked as a dual diagnosis therapist, with a special interest in substance abuse. In addition, my practice areas include relationships, parenting, divorce, grief, depression, anxiety, anger management, trauma, sexual abuse, as well as domestic violence and coping skills. As an individual, family, and marriage therapist, I work in both individual and group formats with children over 5 years old, teens and adults.

Therapeutic Approach

People who seek my help are my clients, not my patients. In using a psychodynamic and family systems framework, my primary goal is to teach principles by which the client ultimately has the tools/skills to meet life’s challenges – by promoting autonomy, responsibility for the choices one makes, and responsibility for the consequences of those choices. I use the concept of Parent/Adult/Child to convey that the client is the director, producer, and script-writer of his/her own life.

Confidentiality

Confidentiality is an essential component of a good therapeutic relationship. However, under threat of harm to oneself or to another, or disclosure of child abuse/neglect, I will break confidentiality in accordance with Michigan or North Carolina law.

"With 30+ years of experience, I assist clients in finding positive, practical solutions to life situations. For profound inner changes to create a happier, healthier you! You are the script-writer, director, and producer of your life, and together as a team, we will devise tailor made plans for your healing to overcome any obstacles to creating the life you want. Specialties in substance abuse, sexual abuse, anxiety, depression, relationships, grief, divorce, etc..., I am able to act as a "trusted guide" holding a mirror for you to access your inner resources. I work with children from age 5, teens, and adults in individual and group formats as an individual, family, and marriage therapist."

Very dissatisfied with the quality of care I received from Karen. I came as part of a couple, and I felt that our concerns to work on our relationship were kind of devalued. I do not remember that we discussed goals and plans of action for those goals, or even what we will look for when we reach the goals in any of our sessions together and we saw Karen for about a total of four months. I feel that if these were set up with to begin with then my husband, Karen, and I would have had guidance for achievements to work towards. As it was, my husband and I spent every session pointing fingers at each other, and all three of us spent the time defusing our anger and hurt feelings. It did not help that although we were in dire need of assistance and should have been seeing Karen on a weekly basis, we saw her 5 days, 5 weeks, 4 weeks, 2 weeks, and 5 weeks apart. How can we do the work on our relationship in session when at this point every session was us checking in with Karen and still pointing fingers at each other? And how were we able to form relationships with Karen when these spaces in between were so far apart? Yes, we have the responsibility to do work at home but Karen is the professional and witnessed how things were between us and it wasn't mentioned until our last session that she would make it a point to fit us in more regularly. I also feel like Karen was very biased. This showed up on our second visit when Karen made a comment that put the full weight of full responsibility of lack of physical intimacy squarely on my shoulders. This was not ok and it was very unprofessional and unethical to state her personal opinions during session. This statement did damage to my relationship with my husband and damage to the trust that I had in her as a professional. An apology was given but not until weeks later even after I wrote an email the day of expressing how upset I was with this statement and being told to bring it up during our next session and we will discuss it then. That was 5 weeks later! I believe that there is a perfect therapist match for anyone seeking out professional help, and I am saddened that this experience has me questioning going to get further help as a couple.
Karen is very helpful with her direct, constructive feedback. Her advice is realistic and solution focused. She patiently listens, and you can tell she is an "old soul" and truly cares about helping her clients, and does not allow money to be a barrier. She emotionally connected with my pre-teen daughter and used language my daughter could understand. She made a huge difference in our lives. Her hours are very flexible, and she is very accommodating. Without hesitation, I recommend Karen for those seeking to heal hurts and wounded spirits.
I've been in and out of therapy since I was sixteen years old and I hadn't had any luck with anyone I had seen. Then I finally found Karen. She's an amazing and extremely intelligent woman that definitely knows her stuff. I've always had a hard time feeling completely comfortable talking to anyone, but Karen makes you feel completely at ease and you feel like your right at home. Which is always a huge deal breaker for me. You might not see eye to eye at first but please don't let that discourage you. It's apart of the therapy healing process, and trust me Karen is the perfect guide and voice of reason. She's single handedly has gotten me through the darkest time in my life to date and I absolutely wouldn't change a thing. She is truly an amazing person. She is my star, My perfect silence.
Karen has been a great help in my journey of healing. She had a special way of helping me to overcome the way I was thinking about myself, the trauma I went through and learning that I have worth. I am the person I am today because of her compassion, intuition and time she spent in my healing process. I’m very grateful. I recommend her to anyone who is ready to begin healing past hurts.
I highly recommend Karen's services to anyone seeking to heal and transform! She is knowledgeable, empathetic and tough in a good way!. Through my journey with Karen I have gained strength, a craved self-confidence and new found independence. My life will never be the same because of Karen!
Karen is an amazing individual. I’ve been counseled by others but she is by far above and beyond anyone I have ever experienced. Her diverse wealth of knowledge is incredibly helpful in so many ways. She has a softness about her but that coupled with her honesty gets right down to business. I was full of confusion not knowing my reality. But with Karen’s help, I learned so more about myself, it can’t be put into words. More of feeling of clarity. Buried in an acquired, lifetime of mish mash, I found that clarity I didn’t think existed. I am ever so thankful for the experience. So happy I was lead to her.
Karen is outstanding. Some counselors can draw out the process of helping you becoming expensive with no results. Karen however, plows through and gets down to your real problems. I am very thankful for Karen's wisdom, guidance and straight forward approach. I have referred several of my friends & family and highly recommend her to anyone seeking help.
Recommended by a family member and I was not disappointed by seeking Karen out. She is amazing at what she does. I have come a long way with her knowledge and support guiding me through some very tragic events and traumatic times. I cannot begin to thank her enough for being such a great listener and being the voice of reason. As a nurse I will personally recommend her to any of my future patients. I don't know where I would be emotionally without her help.
Karen is fantastic. She doesn't let your financial situation get in the way of the time she spends with you. She's caring and really listens. This is coming from someone who didn't want to ever talk to a therapist. Highly recommended.
Shes helped me get through tough times and helps me stay on a good path. Very kind with her words. Thanks!
