My name is Kelly L. Mathis and I’m currently in the US NAVY onboard USS MAINE SSBN 741 Gold. I’m the Leading Culinary Specialist.
I started out my love for cooking with my loving grandma Alice Mathis. She would go in to the kitchen with 5 or 6 ingredients and make some amazing food. Growing up in a small town and not having much money we had one television for a while so I pretty much ended up watching whatever she was watching. We watched show like Natalie Dupree, Yan Can Cook, Justin Wilson, and many others. This just sparked my interest and my journey began.
When I was 13 years old, I moved into the house with my father and step-mother, Marvin and Roxanne Griffin. This was a house filled with love and this was shown in everything that come out of the kitchen. Living in this house I learned all about soul food and what it means to cook from the heart. Cooking with my step-mother was complete bliss and she taught me to always respect the kitchen and to really put love into everything that I make.
Later when I was around 15 years old, I discovered our local southern all you can eat restaurant “ Blue Willow Inn Restaurant”. I thought finally, I could apply for a job as a cook and learn to do the things that my grandmother used to do. That was not the case at first, Louis Van Dyke the owner of Blue Willow Inn didn’t allow 15 year olds to work in the kitchen. So I started working the line and after a year I applied for the newly open kitchen position. I loved every second there. I learned so much about myself and cooking. We accomplished a lot together there but I had dreams that were so much bigger than my small town and Blue Willow.
I joined the NAVY as a cook, then called Mess Management Specialist, now currently called Culinary Specialist. There I was, I had really found my calling and I would be cooking on a Nuclear Submarine. I literally said to myself that not many people can say that.
In my quest to expand myself and give people a taste of my childhood I have created Kelly's Classic Cakes. My main motivation for doing this is first because I love it and second because I hate going into a supermarket and getting those well known classic desserts like red velvet cake and getting disappointed.
