I joined the Kenukan family 25+ years ago then ended up moving out of state. I was excited to resume my training after I moved back to KC and signed my son up as well. Sensei Travis is able to share his impressive martial arts knowledge and skills by providing detailed instruction that improves your proficiency in your selected discipline whether it be grappling/striking/self-defense or all of the above. The training at Kenukan is top notch and I always look forward to attending class! Whether your goal is to learn to defend yourself or become a better martial artist, Kenukan can help you get there if you are willing to put in the work.
My wife and I have been going to Kenukan for almost a year and love it! Sensei Boggs is very knowledgeable and effective at teaching a range of martial arts skills, from traditional to modern combat sports and self-defense. He, along with all of the other students, create a very welcoming atmosphere that makes us eager to come back each week to learn more.
I was looking for a place to resume judo journey after a 35 year hiatus. I stumbled upon the ads for Kenukan Academy. I took the introductory lesson and I've been there ever since, going on 3 years now. It is challenging to learn judo/jujitsu, kickbox/karate, and self defense. Sensei Travis is by far the best instructor I have ever been around. He can break complex moves down and make them seem simple. This is not a "black belt factory", but the knowledge and skill and experience I have gained in 3 years is beyond compare.
We love this place! It's much more than a Dojo, it's a second family. I know that not only is my son getting the best martial arts training around but that both Bob and Travis care about him on a personal level. They simply love what they do. He's made great friends and unexpectedly, so have I. I was first referred to Kenukan by a friend who had two brothers go through the program years ago. I loved knowing someone who knew these instructors on a personal level. We had tried martial arts at other places and to be honest it all came down to what color belt you had and how fast you got it. That's not what Kenukan is about. You won't hemorrhage money on belts. You will learn skills and when you've accomplished the right skills you will move up, whether you are a child or an adult. It's the same for both. I would refer anyone of my friends to Kenukan
All i can tell you is it’s worth it. i been training for almost two years and don’t regret a second of it. Kenukan academy is no Mc Dojo so if you wanna learn martial arts learn from great sensei’s and great student try Kenukan it will improve health and quality of life if your consistent.
I have been a student for 20 years. Kenukan is a place for serious martial artists as well as those looking to gain fundamental self defense skills. I have been so impressed by their depth of knowledge and skill that I look forward to learning from them for the rest of my life. My children attend as well and are growing in confidence and athleticism with each class. They enjoy the classes and can't wait to go back and learn more. I know we have a second family at Kenukan.
My older son has been enrolled in Kenukan Academy of Self-Defense for more than 2 and a half years, my younger son will start there in October. Travis Boggs is a skilled instructor that seamlessly integrates striking and grappling in his system. Some students my be galled at the slow pace of rank advancement at Kenukan, but having previously studied in Jim Harrison's and Steve Mackey's Bushidokan system of Karate, I understood the values and rank structure that I was signing my kids up for at Kenukan. I strongly value the fact that rank there cannot be bought. It does not matter how much money has been spent, or how much time you have invested, only the skillset you have developed. If you have the skills you EARN the rank. I like that there are no kiddie black-belts here. Their youth program allows children the possibility to advance up to green belt. Bob Boggs, Travis' father and the founder of the dojo once explained that "Our black belts are meant to be expert-level fighters. I would never trust a 10 year old to teach a troop of marines hand-to-hand combat skills they need, so a 10-year-old should not be wearing a black belt." Ranking is slow for their adults, too... but because the rank is actually earned and hard-to-earn, there is real achievement and pride associated with it. And even Kenukan's lowest ranking students have developed more skill than what I've witnessed at some other training centers, so I am confident I have my kids enrolled in the right place. Character isn't built by doing the easy things. "Anything can be made easily or bought cheaply, but that which must be earned dearly holds the greatest value."
I've been a student at Kenukan for a number of years and I love coming here. Sensei Travis Boggs is a ridiculously skilled martial artist while also being a great teacher. The variety of techniques with overarching broad categories of striking, grappling, and self-defense results in a practical and well-rounded curriculum. Everyone is respectful and the other students are helpful, friendly, and work well with people of all skill levels. The fact that it takes dedication and effort to get promoted is a good thing and stands in contrast to some McDojo schools that pump out black belts like they're going out of style. I would recommend anyone who is interested in martial arts or self-defense or even in getting better shape to come out and give it a try.
I have been part of the Kenukan family for 25+ years. Thank goodness I walked into this dojo after moving to the area. I had trained at a few other places before joining Kenukan. However, this school is on a whole ‘nother level. Kenukan is the real deal. The world class training here is very well rounded, yet students are welcome to focus on their favorite disciplines too, whether Karate, Kickboxing, Ju-Jutsu, Self Defense, etc. I can’t say enough good things about Kenukan. If you are looking for the best of the best in martial arts schools, look no further.
I have been a student at Kenukan for about 4 years. Sensei Travis Boggs is an exceptional martial artist and teacher whose passion and enthusiasm is contagious! Kenukan Ryu integrates techniques from many styles of martial arts resulting in a well-rounded curriculum with an underlying theme of practicality and self-defense. The mental and physical benefits you will develop are priceless. If you want to learn REAL fighting skills and know you've EARNED your rank, this is the place to be!
