The Kingston is renowned for great DJ’s, bands and musicians that have played there over the years.
The legendary Kingston nightclub was initially established by Raymond and Barry O’Brien back in 1982. The original location was Crenshaw Boulevard in LA.
So why was the club called Kingston12? The area code for Trench town in Jamaica where Reggae was born was Kingston12! We wanted to dedicate a club to the worldwide spread of Reggae here in Los Angeles. So every Friday and Saturday night in the club – there was only Reggae music played, whether that was live or pre-recorded.
Through the years, many different superstar DJ’s and bands have played there including many internationally recognized artists like Don Carlos, Leroy Sibbles and Big Youth. All these famous artists helped turn Kingston12 into a Reggae hotspot.
In 1985 the club moved into a new location in Santa Monica. New additions were added to the scheme of things – like a Jamaican restaurant, better music and sound systems. With all these new changes, the Kingston12 organization grew in statue and in size.
In 1999 we moved to our current location in S Boylston Street, and we have our opening party on September 6th 2014!
Our motto is “the one good thing about music, is that when it hits you – you feel no pain”.
