About

Description

Kohnen’s Country Bakery, located in historic downtown Tehachapi, California, is a delightful contemporary German bakery designed with Old World Charm. Honoring his German food traditions, baker Thomas Kohnen makes every batch from scratch – including some 20 varieties of artisan breads dense with whole grains, full flavors, and crisp crusts. Kohnen’s offers fresh bread baked daily, including crusty rye, basil-barley garden, six-grain, sun dried tomato, delicate cinnamon raisin, and even pizza bread, not to mention pretzels, boiled-then-baked bagels, and Brötchen – traditional, crusty German breakfast rolls. We also offer refreshing German beer and freshly brewed iced tea.

Desserts are gorgeous and irresistible, too. A few temptations are cinnamon crisps, apricot-walnut kolaches, and espresso chocolate chip cookies. The cafe also serves fresh-made soups and made-to-order sandwiches using Kohnen’s breads for take-out, dining inside, or on the patio.

We were recently awarded TripAdvisor's 2015 Certificate of Excellence, so make sure to stop by soon!

"Thomas Kohnen enjoyed 22 years of pleasant family life in his home town of Bottrop, West Germany. He grew up like most kids in West Germany. For him and every other boy on the block, his dream was to become a soccer player until his coach determined Thomas had to have two left feet. He had normal grades and finished high school at age 15 in May of 1977. Fifteen is the standard age for completing school in Germany. In August of the same year, he took an apprenticeship as a Konditor Confectionist at the Franz Bergendahl Bacherrei. It was the biggest bakery in town and very well known for its disciplined training procedures. He worked as an apprentice for three years while also attending trade school."

This place was so delicious. We ordered one of the giant Poor Boy sandwiches to go along with a selection of pastries. The sandwich was absolutely loaded with meats and cheeses in delicious bread. As for the pastries, they were so tasty, it's a good thing we don't live nearby, or we would be there too often. Faves were the eclair and pecan roll. Everything was so reasonably priced!
Nearly every time I come to Tehachapi, I'll stop here. The food, the décor, and atmosphere can't be beat. Every sandwich I've tried has been delicious, and their pastries are amazing. My personal favorites are their Tiramisu and Carrot Cake, but their cheesecakes are good as well. Whether you are after a quick bite, or to load up on sweets, this place has you covered.
Amazing bakery! We love coming here instead of fast food and whenever someone visits we always bring them here for breakfast or lunch. Sandwiches and everything in the case is delicious. Would definitely recommend stopping by and getting yourself a treat and sandwich.
Please like us on Facebook and Instagram at SNDTRAVELS and EATWELLTRAVELOFTEN Always like to find local bakeries for lunch time sandwiches and this one caught my eye. Limited sandwich menu but you can build your own deli style with several homemade bread choices. I ordered turkey with lettuce, tomato, Swiss cheese, red onion, alfalfa sprouts, mayo and German mustard all on Sheepherders French bread Everything was very fresh and thoroughly enjoyed. The bakery is loaded with pastries and I will go back! Highly recommended
The salad was great. It had a lot of veggies other than lettuce. The rueben sandwich was OK. They don't have their sausage sandwich at this time. The eclair was excellent. Great chocolate.
Went there to pick up a sandwich for a road trip, didn't expect to find this gem of a shop, all decorated with a german theme, plenty of German souvenirs, shirts, beer steins and some specialty food items. Oh yeah, about that sandwich for the road, they had a variety of fresh bread, meat and vegetable options and sauerkraut to build your own sandwich, or you can choose from their sandwich menu, make sure to save room for dessert because they also have plenty of pastries, fresh pies. I left with a pie, strudel, 2 loaves of fresh bread, oh yeah, and a hot, Delicious Reuben sandwich, big enough to feed 2 people with a pickle and chips. My road trip just got better.
Such a great little bakery right next to the railroad tracks in the heart of downtown. The cheesecake and tiramisu were great. My family loved the zucchini walnut bread. A very good selection. Staff is hit and miss, but they're generally very friendly. I always stop here when I visit Tehachapi.
Got to visit for the first time today and everything was really good! We got the po boy, cherry turnover and brownie cheesecake. I wish their boutique was open while we were there though.
Nice place to spend your breakfast morning with lots to do at home. Today's brunch was casual and delicious. I loved the outside scenery as lots of old model cars go bye. Their General store on stand by after the meal, just a nice place to visit. I want to go back next month Octoberfest
I love this place!! Always fresh foods and friendly staff.. great prices and love the atmosphere.
