Lake Placid Olympic Ski Jumping Complex

Description

The Lake Placid Olympic Ski Jumping Complex comprises a 90- and 120-meter ski jumps towers built for the 1980 Olympic Games in Lake Placid, New York, United States. They are located two miles from Lake Placid, off the Old Military Road, in Essex County, New York. The sky deck on the 120-meter jump offers views of nearby John Brown's Farm and the surrounding High Peaks of the Adirondacks. Training and competition for Nordic ski jumping takes place year round thanks to a plastic mat out-run on the 90m jump. The Freestyle Aerial Training Center is located to the right of the base of the jump towers. Aerialists can train in the summer months by jumping into a 750,000 gallon pool.HistoryThe Lake Placid Club built the first ski jump on this site in 1920, using the hillside itself as the jump surface. The jump was referred to as the Intervales 35-meter jump. On February 21. 1921, the first competition was held at this site, drawing 3,000 spectators. The record jump for the day was 124 feet, set by Antony Maurer. In 1923, the jump was enlarged to fifty meters, and in 1927, a new steel tower was built, raising the jump to 60 meters. In 1928, the tower was raised to 75 meters; this was the tower used for the 1932 Winter Olympic Games. In 1977, the old tower was demolished to make way for new 70 and 90-meter jumps, used for the 1980 Winter Olympic Games. In 1994, the landing hills were re-graded to bring the jumps into compliance with current rules, and increasing their height to 90 and 120 meters.

"Ski jumping showcases, competitions, and athlete training is at the core of the Olympic Jumping Complex. Watch Nordic ski jumpers fly the length of a football field or Alpine and Snowboard athletes flip and spin in the air from the deck of the Intervales Base Lodge. Then, experience the thrill of the ziplines located next to the 100 meter ski jump, emulating the rush of ski jumping at speeds up to 30 miles per hour.High speeds aren’t all that the Olympic Jumping Complex has to offer. There’s the brand new Skyride, an eight-passenger pulse gondola to transport you up to the base of the ski jumping towers. From there is the newly-remodeled scenic elevator that takes you to the sky deck of the 128 meter ski jump. With its glass exterior,"

This was so cool. We took skyride to top. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Once you get off you walk to the 120 Meter jump. There's an elevator to take you to the top. Once up in jump you walk out onto a catwalk and you see where Olympians would go down the jump. You have to be crazy to do this I have so much more respect for these skiers. It is amazing the height there actually going down. Def visit here if your in area.
Really cool place! It’s a nice experience to get to see what the athletes experience right before their jumps. The view from up there is stunning and makes great & memorable pictures! The staff on-site were all super friendly & welcoming. Plan about 45 minutes to one hour for the entire visit.
We stopped here on our way out of Lake Placid and only did it because people in town said we should. It turned out to be one of the best parts of the trip! The views on the top of the jumps were incredible and they even had kids practicing on the jumps that we were able to watch.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNoPrice for adult entry$16–20
Very incredible thing to see! You pay $20 for a short gondola ride up a hill like a minute long and then there’s an elevator to take you up to the very top of the jump. We got lucky and saw the US Olympic Team training! Very incredible!!Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNot surePrice for adult entry$16–20

Very well maintained. Lots to see and watch at once. Parking is spacious and has levels to go to. Lots of history to read and visit at the training center. Beautiful views !! It does cost to ride the Gondola to the top of the mountain.
Came for the Fall festival. What a great venue to hold this! I haven't been there in years, so I was a local being a tourist in my neighborhood. Great band, food trucks, indoor lodge with friendly staff, a place to sit and relax, a gift shop, and indoor facilities! Really, could you ask for more?! Hanging out at the base of the 70 & 90 meter Olympic ski jumps, zip line, a gondola and people out enjoying themselves. Did I mention that even though I was in the overflow parking lot the horse show grounds there was free shuttle service?
The ski jumps are always impressive to see. Unfortunately, the lifts were down for service, and there was no way to the top on the day we visited. The website didn't mention this scheduled service, nor did anyone when we checked hours on a phone call the day before. I've been many times, my wife has been once, but our kids had never been, and now we'll have to wait till the next time. But, for a normal day, these are an amazing piece of history to behold, and fully worth going to see.
This was an ok experience. There honestly wasn't much to it. We bought tickets to the gondola and were taken on a 5-minute ride up the ski jump. The view was pretty good. there wasn't much to see or do once we got up there. there was the option to go up higher in the second tower via an elevator. only half our group actually wanted to go and they said the view was pretty much the same.
There were no events when we stopped in but it's a beautiful building with a gift shop, and lots of room inside and outside on a huge deck. There was nobody at the front gate, since there was no event I guess. There was no fee to get in or tickets required. There are zip lines.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNoPrice for adult entryFree
