How did this begin? In 1887, Albert Landreth recognized that Wisconsin soil could produce superior quality peas. He began operating out of a small hotel on the shores of Lake Michigan in Manitowoc – the humble founding of Lakeside Foods.
In 1912, an Owatonna, Minnesota cooperative, which canned peas and corn, was purchased by L.C. Lange, and thus, the Owatonna Canning Company was born. Up until 1995, the plant processed corn, green beans, green peas, asparagus, pumpkin, and wax beans.
In 1997, Owatonna Canning Company was purchased by Chiquita Brands International. In 2003, the Chiquita Processed Foods division was sold off to Seneca Foods Corp., which in turn sold the Owatonna plant to Lakeside Foods.
Today, the Owatonna plant produces canned corn, green peas, carrots, mixed vegetables, potatoes, dry beans, and stew vegetables.
