Lakewood Cemetery

About

Since 1871, Lakewood’s 250 acres of urban parkland have served as a community gathering place and a chronicle of our history. Today, Lakewood is making memorialization more relevant, accessible and inviting for new audiences and generations.

Description

Lakewood Cemetery is a special place. It's a haven of beauty, art and history, but its most important role is to serve families by providing a place of remembrance for loved ones.

Lakewood’s park-like grounds have preserved the history of our community’s people, cultures and events since 1871. We have captured some of this history, as well as information about funerary art and architecture found at Lakewood, and we share it with the community in a variety of ways, including events and tours.

Memorial property and cremation choices
With more than 250 acres, Lakewood will continue to provide memorial property and cremation choices for many years to come. As a nonprofit organization, all funds generated from sales at Lakewood are contributed to a trust fund that is used for the continual care of the cemetery.

Mission

We serve families and our community by offering commemorative services to honor, celebrate, and remember a loved one’s life in a place of beauty and solace.

Our core values are:

Welcome: We welcome the community to the beauty of Lakewood and serve families with honesty, integrity, and compassion.

Honor: We believe every life deserves to be remembered, commemorated and celebrated.

Excellence: As leaders in our profession, we achieve the highest standard in our service to families.

Stewardship: We are stewards of our landscape, our history, and the financial resources entrusted to us.

The grounds of this place are just as incredible and impressive as the interior of the the chapel. There is beauty all around and it is such a peaceful place to be. The inside of the chapel offers up some incredible artwork done in tiles. This is a huge cemetery and it gives you the feeling of being away from the hustle and bustle of the city even though you are right next to it. I've seen people just going through the grounds on their morning walks and enjoying the serenity that this place offers.
It's my favorite place to spend time and clear my head, I have awful agoraphobia and anxiety so I explore the grounds with my van and take photos. Absolutely adore it and hope to lay my own head to rest there someday.
Well-kept grounds and stunning location with lots of places to explore and learn the history of Minnesota.
If I could give Lakewood a rating equivalent to all the stars in the sky, I would. My mother was laid to rest here on June 1 after she lost her battle with Covid 19. She had a hard life so I’m glad that she’ll rest in these beautiful, peaceful grounds for eternity. I love that Lakewood has events, remembrances and other services for the living to continue to honor and remember those that they’ve lost. When I purchased my mother’s plot last year, Kelly Leahy was simply amazing! She was so patient, knowledgeable and knew even more about the burial rules of my culture than I did. She made the process really easy and smooth. When I lost my mother this year and had questions about my mother’s burial because of the pandemic, Kelly was so supportive and responsive. The funeral home that was preparing my mom for burial was really sketchy and unresponsive so Kelly even provided her expertise in this area because I needed a second opinion. Words cannot express my gratitude for everything she did! I also dealt with Chris and a lovely lady whose name I forgot to ask for but suffice it to say, they were both wonderful. It gives me great peace of mind knowing that these caring and extraordinary people work here as I don’t live nearby. Lakewood is impressive in every way!
This Cemetery is restful and beautiful, with many markers for local Minnesota leaders.
It's a beautiful area, convenient to reach, plenty of parking. They know why we're here, staff is friendly and knowledgeable. It was a beautiful chapel which I'm told one of our family members helped with the dome ceiling. I thank everyone for making the best situation possible for what it is. Even the plow guys yielded to our convoy! As sad as a death is, the event was quite nice. Sidewalk salted, walk ways plowed, staff on site to answer questions. I really felt the love, care, and attention given, 10/10
The Chapel is so beautiful and the grounds so excellently manicured. I love that they leave the Chapel open for folks to appreciate. One of my favorite places in the city.
I just moved back to Uptown Mpls, and needed someplace to walk a couple of miles without plowing thru the summer mobs around Bde Maka Ska. I have extended family buried here so I figured I could justify my presence if necessary. It turned out to be a wonderful place to walk for under an hour. Saw wild turkeys, a fishing osprey on the pond, and some stones/monuments that are true artworks. Highly recommended if you need some peace. Just avoid weekends, don't act invasive, and you should be fine.
Beautiful spacious grounds with many large old trees. Abundant wildlife including deer, turkeys, raptors, songbirds, waterfowl, squirrels, racoons, herons and more. Lots of unique grave markers, including somber old tombstones that go back as far as the mid-1800s. The chapel is incredibly beautiful, a little known local gem. The mosaics inside were created by the last generation of old school mosaic master craftspeople, and are on par with the stunning mosaics in the chapels of Europe. The inside of the chapel is a must-see for anyone who appreciates creations of tremendous beauty
This cemetery has a spectacular view and the ground keeping is spot on. I scout out a lot of locations for photography, and this place is one of my favorite spots in the city. Check out some of the photos I have taken there.
