The McNair Scholars Program is a federally funded program that motivates and prepares first-generation, low-income, and underrepresented students for the rigors of graduate school through involvement in undergraduate research and other activities.
Established in 1986 by the U.S. Department of Education and named for astronaut and Challenger space shuttle crew member Dr. Ronald E. McNair, the program encourages students to pursue graduate studies by providing opportunities to define goals, to engage in research, and to develop the skills and student/faculty mentor relationships critical to success at the doctoral level.
The mission of the Lamar University McNair Scholars Program is to provide promising undergraduates with the knowledge necessary to achieve and successfully obtain a terminal degree. The federally funded TRiO program accomplishes this through enhancement workshops, advanced research, a mentoring program, and a supportive atmosphere.
