Lan Su Chinese Garden

About

Lan Su Chinese Garden is one of Portland’s greatest treasures…a powerfully inspiring experience that takes you through time, offering a window into Chinese culture, history and way of thinking.

Description

Lan Su Chinese Garden is much more than just a beautiful garden. It’s a creative wonder—an authentically built, powerfully inspiring experience based on a 2,000-year-old Chinese tradition that melds art, architecture, design and nature in perfect harmony.

Guided tours are offered twice or more daily with trained volunteer guides and are included with the cost of admission or membership. Tours last approximately 45 minutes and visitors are welcome to join in or drop out at any time. No reservations are required to join.

The Teahouse in the Tower of Cosmic Reflections offers visitors the ability to sit, relax, and enjoy tea while gazing into the Garden. Operated by the Tao of Tea, a local company that promotes the art and culture of tea, the Teahouse brings together the beauty and symbolism of the Garden with Chinese tea culture. (Visiting the Teahouse requires Garden membership or admission.)

Lan Su Chinese Garden offers infinite paths to discovery. One visit just isn't enough to take in the depth and abundance of experiences. Lan Su is ever-changing--by the minute, by the hour, and with the seasons.

"Lan Su Chinese Garden is one of Portland's greatest treasures and most interesting sites to see while visiting Portland. A result of a collaboration between the cities of Portland and Suzhou, our sister city in China's Jiangsu province that's famous for its beautiful Ming Dynasty gardens, Lan Su was built by Chinese artisans from Suzhou and is one the most authentic Chinese gardens outside of China.Much more than just a beautiful botanical garden, Lan Su is a creative wonder — a powerfully inspiring experience based on a 2,000-year-old Chinese tradition that melds art, architecture, design and nature in perfect harmony.Once inside the garden's walls, you'll feel as if you've traveled through time to another era in a faraway world."

What an awesome experience! So peaceful and full of culture. Amazing opportunity for us and our kids to learn about an amazing culture. Had a nice tea and calligraphy experience and learned a lot with a cool take away! Kiddos had fun doing a scavenger hunt. Amazing views and a lot of places to just relax and chill taking in all the beauty here. Didn't need to make a reservation of get tickets early although you can save a few $$ by getting them online and also using their app we were told.
This is a beautiful traditional Chinese garden. We were there right at open on a Sunday and there was a modest line already waiting. The gardens are beautiful, and there's a small gift shop and a cute little tea-house with delicious teas and some snacks. Budget an hour or so to wander the gardens and enjoy a cup of tea. Well worth the price of entry.
This is a hidden treasure in the heart of Portland. Easy walking distant from anywhere in the downtown area, the Lan Su Chinese Garden is a must see spot for everyone. We visited mid morning and it was not crowded at all, allowing me to get many beautiful photos. The entry fee is reasonable, and allows you to return later in the day. Truly, this is a place I could sit for hours in and relax, and now I want my backyard to look just like it!
First-time visitors are in for a somewhat quick and short walk through. It's not too big good for a short visit. Easy access to walking. Limited with space for walkers or wheelchair. Just because the pathways are somewhat narrow. Would be definitely good to go first thing in the morning before it gets crowded. One-time visit.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNoPrice for adult entry$21–30
Attended the first Dragon Boat Festival tonight 7:30-9:30 and it was beautiful and fun for all ages. There were traditional foods to sample and the tea house was stocked with festival desserts as well as foods available in other buildings. I believe they plan to make the festival an annual event. Another great reason to become a member! Their memberships are reasonably priced and tax-deductible. We have a family membership and that covers 6 people- a great deal at a wonderful Portland treasure. And easy parking too!
Beautiful garden! Try a hidden Portland gem. The small space made it all the more beautiful as the foliage and architecture were more densely packed. The tea house food was absolutely delicious, I highly recommend the 7 treasure tea and peanuts. They had restrooms and an adorable gift shop.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedYes
Lovely gardens in the middle of Portland. The landscaping and flowers were just amazing. Several cultural art exhibits that added an extra pleasure to this garden. They have a lovely Tea Shop in the back that overlooks the water. Take time to have a cup of tea and enjoy the view.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNoPrice for adult entry$11–15

This was a true zen experience. It doesn't draw the crowds that the Japanese garden does, which means the lines don't exists either. Purchased tickets ahead of the visit online, parked in a nearby lot and walked to the gardens. It was delightful and surprising that once inside the gardens a lot of the city noise dissipated. It was beautiful and the tea house was such a pleasant stop.
A mini serene getaway in the midst of the hustle and bustle of the city. Beautiful garden and atmosphere, very picturesque especially if the weather's nice. Aesthetic tea house and walkways Different events often going on, I happened to come when they were having a cool poetry event
