Lanterman House

About

In 1915, Dr. Roy Lanterman commissioned architect A. L. Haley to design a fireproof bungalow of reinforced concrete for his family and the result was a unique architectural treasure. There are many arts and crafts elements in the Lanterman house.

Perhaps not the most exhilirating experience ever, but certainly a hidden gem! The Lanterman House is a true time machine, masterfully preserved in all its glory.
great way to spend some free time on an afternoon if you’re into architecture and home design. interesting and informative tour, lovely wall murals throughout the house.

The Lanterman House was built 1915 of reinforced fireproof concrete. A ballroom - that has not really been useful due to the lack of ballroom dancers- covers the entire second floor. Much effort went into the appearance of wealth and literacy. At the end of the day though, the pretty book covers and the partial marble floor are just such a sorry sight. An attempt to have nature bow to one's will. A focus on the facade. It tells the story of survival and of struggle.
Lanterman House is an historic site. A nice, welcoming place, and wanderful stuff. Tour was very good. Got from their small bookstore Passport 2 History - a small guide to 83 Historic Sites in 9 counties of Central & SoCal, and this house is one of those sites. An informative small guide-booklet. The Lanterman House offers events, and I'll try to attend one in December. Will be a nice place also for children, so they can see and learn how was the life of a good family in those early days when the area was just developing.
Very nice historic place to visit! 8000 Sq ft house made of concrete!

Another one of the Passport2History Museums, The Lanterman House is very interesting and pretty inside. The tour starts with a pretty boring video if you have a toddler, but the actual tour is very cool. The highlight is probably the ballroom which apparently still has bi annual balls with live bands and period dress! I loved all the antiques throughout the house. While not there anymore, they had built an organ room, and that organ is now at the El Capitan! The woman giving us the tour was very nice and even let us pick a few oranges to take home! Make sure you double check that they give you the Passport discount, as we forgot about it and missed our discount. Check it out though!
Amazing museum memorializing a founding family of la Canada. Interesting story about the characters of the family and the restoration of the 100 year old house. All original furnishings which is never the case in these places. Highly recommended treasure!
