Decent sit down Mexican restaurant if you’re looking for something nice next to the San Gabriel mission. Easy parking, though it gets busy during peak meal times. Very quiet area at night. The restaurant is beautifully decorated and has plenty of seating to spare. Food and drinks were expensive but high quality. Service was excellent, the staff was attentive and kind. Really liked the chicken mole—sauce was flavorful, and chicken was very tender. Their handmade corn tortillas were good but I’m not sure if it was worth the up-charge. Guac was a bit bland. Seems like your luck might depend what you order. Overall it was a nice experience for what it was, a fancier sit down restaurant serving quality Mexican food.
The restaurant is nicely decorated and it is in a old Spanish style building. We went there for lunch. The servers a nice and friendly but we were seated sat for a long time before we were given the menu. The chips and salsa were very good. We ordered steak medium rare and it came well done. The supposedly, 10 oz steak was so thin hardly taste like steak. Chili Rellenos was so eggy, cheesy, and tasteless. Shrimp Taco was average. Chicken burrito was alright it was a big burrito stuffed with rice and chicken, very filling. When the bill came they changed service charge of 20% because as we were a party of 6. They also charged us 3.7% for paying with credit card. First of all the service didn’t deserve 20% service charge. Secondly, I never been charged extra for using credit card! Very disappointing!
Chips and salsa - fine, as expected. Fries - surprisingly excellent, the perfect snack while sipping our cocktails. Cocktails - my blackberry mojito went down super smooth though the mint garnish looked less than clean; my husband seemed to enjoy his cadillac margarita. Quesabirria - delicious! Loved every buttery, cheesy, juicy bite. Veggie fajitas - nice char, good flavor, super stingy on the tortillas really, two tortillas isn't a lot for a person. Service - seemed a little joyless, though I suspect perhaps it was due to us coming in an hour before closing on a Friday night with only a couple other occupied tables. I could tell maybe the staff didn't really want us there and instead wanted to go home early. And they forgot our water until we asked for it. Atmosphere - maybe it's because we're not huge sports bar people, but the place felt more like a room with TVs and tables that also just happened to be where food was served, and not like an actual restaurant that was intentionally set up to entice people to sit and enjoy the meal and the experience of dining out with their party without staring at a television. We'll try again on a busier night when perhaps everyone is more present and less focused on watching the game or getting out of there.
I wasn't sure what to expect from this establishment considering some of the negative reviews online. It is a little pricey maybe compared to formula Mexican restaurants but the quality of food, service and ambience makes it worth while. I'm not sure if we got charged for the chips and salsa as mentioned in so many reviews since I was not paying. But the Mission district is right there. High rent venue and they strike a good balance between price and offerings. Full bar, potentially difficult parking. Portions on some items are not huge. But people shouldn't overeat anyway. Nice selection of salsas. I'd go back again.
The restaurant is very cute decorated with natural plants. The food is delicious. I ordered the chilaquiles and the flan. The chips and salsa good customer service. I'll be coming back again soon.
We had wonderful fresh food that we loved! They even have home made tortillas! Delicious!! The margaritas were great as well! We will definitely be back!Food: 5/5
Service was horribly terrible from the waiter, and I wasn't impressed who I'm guessing was the owner. The food isn't that good as I was told it was going to be from friends. It was something that I believe could be easily made at home, so it's not worth the price. Which is funny since the owner told me they buy high-quality ingredients but taste average at best. The drinks were the best thing, if anything.
We ordered our food for pick up. Food was not made until my husband arrived. Shrimp cocktails were not as described on menu. Diced avocados were substitute for celery, not my request. "Special Sauce" , nothing specials. Shrimp was not fresh, thawed from frozen bag. Cocktails didn't come with saltine crackers. The chile were a bit too watert with no salt for our taste. We've been waiting for so long to try food from this establishment but unfortunately we are so disappointed.
First time visiting Lunas. It's a small restaurant but has a homey vibe. No where really to wait for a table so you'll probably be outside or standing awkwardly at the front door. Food has good flavor. I had the shrimp cocktail. Only gripe I had with the shrimp cocktail is that I noticed they cut the shrimp in half to make it look like there is more in the cup. Everyone in my party said their food was good and had no complaints. Not a place I'd crave but I would go back if I was in the area.
The service here isn’t good. Food is great but often the staff messes up the order. Sitting with the restaurant now and there’s been an error with the table next to me abs both my wife and my orders. Food has always been great but the service needs work.Food: 4/5
