Lava Butte

Description

Lava Butte is a cinder cone in central Oregon, United States, just west of US Highway 97 between the towns of Bend, Oregon, and Sunriver, Oregon. It is part of a system of small cinder cones on the northwest flank of Newberry Volcano, a massive shield volcano which rises to the southeast. The cinder cone is capped by a crater which extends about 60ft deep beneath its south rim, and 160ft deep from the 5020ft summit on its north side. Lava Butte is part of the Newberry National Volcanic Monument.Volcanic historyLike the other cinder cones in the area, Lava Butte only experienced a single eruption, dated by geologists in 1977 to 6,150 carbon-14 years, equivalent to about 7,000 years ago. The eruption began with a fissure spewing hot cinders to form the cone. In the next phase, a river of hot basalt flowed from the base of the small volcano to cover a large area to the west with a lava flow which remains largely free of vegetation. The lava flows reached the Deschutes River about 2.5mi to the west of the cone, burying its former channel under over 100ft of lava and damming the river to form a lake, known as Lake Benham. The river eventually overflowed the lava dam and eroded down into it, draining the lake and forming Benham Falls. Geologists estimate that 90% of the magma erupted as lava flows, 9% as scoria which forms the cone, and 1% as volcanic ash which forms a thin layer extending to the north.

This is one of those out of the way, could miss it stops that is so worth it. The Butte is an old lava dome and offers some amazing views of the area. There is a buss that you will need to catch to the top as in peak season they do not allow you to drive up so keep that in mind when planning. Once at the top you are able to walk the rim of the creator which offers some pretty spectacular views. There are trails up to the butte that are paved for those looking for more of an outing at the stop. Young kids will find the red dirt and catapultiers more exciting though so be prepared =
A scenic hike . Stunning views from the top ! Lots of geological information available if you talk to the guide . If you don’t want to hike A 3$ Shuttle Bus is available every 20 minutes
$5 to get into the parking lot only to find that you have to take a $3 per person shuttle to get past the parking lot even though there were only 5 cars in the lot and no shuttle. Not enough of an attraction to spend hours to see it anyway. You have to go miles down a side road to get back on the highway as they have the on-ramp blocked. What idiot planned that? I would suggest closing it or sell it to some rich guy for his mansion.
After a short walk at the base, head up to the top shuttle, private car or hike depending for more bizarre landscapes. The red-orange cinder cone and crater make for stunning visual foreground against the majesty of the Cascade's snow capped peaks. Views of Bachelor, Sisters and Jefferson are stunning.
Excellent views! What an incredible spot, highly recommend for locals and visitors alike. Great for all ages! If hiking isn’t a possibility, you can drive right up to the top. But the hike is incredible, with great views all the way up. Definitely a butt burner, especially carrying a kiddo! It’s fairly steep, good fun, quick hike. A little over a mile and a half if you park at the very start. Well worth it though. Bring water! There is more than just the butte to hike, below the lava fields are some really lovely flat trails, take a right at the visitors center instead. There are bathrooms available. But not at the top of the butte.
This truly should be higher but Lava Butte is closed from October to May. Sure you can hope road is cleared enough for your car to get into the do not enter wrong way parking lot to hike a beautifully paved trail to the top amongst lava stone, but the roads are NOT maintained. The visitor center is NOT open for 6 months. Please go between May 1st and September, not sure what the weather is like then. I thought early April wasnt off season. I hope you enjoy Lava Butte, the bus to the top, and all the beauty it has to offer but do so during the right season otherwise you may get stuck in the road, come across a downed fence over the road, and you will need to do quite the hike to the top.
Skip the $3 shuttle and hike up! It’s 1.75miles and 500ft of elevation
My husband, baby and I walked up this the other day and it was beautiful. We were visiting from out of town and when we arrived, the parking lot was closed. There was another parking lot open nearby and we went and parked there. Some locals said the trail is still open to hikers, you just have to go around towards the freeway and in through the gate. There were some ice patches on the North side of the trail but it wasn’t too bad and I was in tennis shoes. It’s a nice distance hike about 4 miles round trip at a good incline and the view was stunning. It was a clear day when we went. We only ran into a few people we were hiking on a Friday afternoon but I can imagine it can get busy. It’s an all paved path which I appreciated. Definitely recommend this hike among the lava!
Short shuttle ride to the top. Great area and mountain views, short walk around the top.
I went here the first week of June before it got too hot. I drove to the top instead of walking up that steep hill. You get a nice view of the lava fields and the surrounding area in all directions. Above the viewpoint is a working Ranger lookout station. There are some small trials to do a little exploring if you want and several areas to get some nice photos of the Cascades and the lava flow.
