Estate Planning - Wills, Trusts, Powers of Attorney, Medical Directives, Special Needs and Guardianship.
Estate planning is not just for wealthy or elderly people. Everyone needs an estate plan that includes a Will, a Power of Attorney and a Living Will. If you have a child with special needs, you should also make sure this child has a properly drafted Special Needs Trust, to protect his eligibility for government benefits. If you have a "blended" family, or are in a same-sex relationship, you should plan appropriately, to ensure that your partner/spouse and all of your children will be protected after your death, according to your wishes. A complete estate plan will also address how your loved ones will (if and when you want them to) access your “digital assets” – photo and music sharing sites, email accounts, Amazon and similar account balances, and social media accounts.
It is important to do this planning while you are still healthy. I had a close relative who developed dementia and died without a will. It made his family’s life unnecessarily complicated at a time when they were least able to cope with it. Preparing your estate plan isn’t glamorous, but plan ahead and get it done – for you, and for your loved ones who will otherwise have to deal with the consequences of your failure to make a plan.
