Lawyers for the Creative Arts provides pro bono legal assistance to qualifying individuals and organizations in all areas of the arts.
LCA is the only charitable organization in the state of Illinois and one of few similar unaffiliated Volunteer Lawyer for the Arts organizations nationwide that provides pro bono legal services and education to financially eligible individuals, small businesses and not-for-profit organizations in all areas of the arts, entertainment and culture.
With a dedicated core staff backed by hundreds of experienced volunteer attorneys, LCA provides essential legal counsel and support to every facet of the arts and entertainment communities, including the literary, visual, and performing arts. LCA has been helping the arts communities for over 40 years and has assisted thousands of artists and arts organizations, including some of the most prominent in the area.
LCA presents over 25 annual lectures and educational programs to spread awareness and impart knowledge as part of a preventative lawyering plan to help potential clients spot legal issues early and take steps to protect their work. We strive to help artists and arts and cultural organizations avoid disputes and litigation and instead proactively grow, emphasizing that artists treat their work as businesses and document all transactions. We also host a four-hour comprehensive not-for-profit and tax exemption workshop six times each year.
Through these services, LCA provides the necessary assistance that artists need to effectively protect and run their businesses. Each year, LCA provides pro bono legal services and educational programs to more than 2,000 individuals with an estimated value over $4 million.
LCA provides the link between the artistic and legal worlds to ensure that artists can continue doing what they do best: creating.
