Lebanon Public Library

About

Connecting people to stories, ideas, information, and technology since 1908.

Description

In 1903, local attorney W. Chester Maple received a letter from philanthropist Andrew Carnegie offering Lebanon $10,000 for the construction of a public library providing the city could donate an acceptable site and agree to maintenance costs of $1,000 per year.
On January 1, 1908, Lebanon's Carnegie Library was opened to the public. As Lebanon has grown, so has the Lebanon Public Library. In 1940, use of the Library was extended to all residents of Warren County. A bookmobile service was established in 1943, broadening the Llibrary's reach to schools and villages outside of Lebanon. In 1955, the basement was renovated for additional space and a large addition was built in the 1980's. Library Park was added in 2010.
Currently, the Lebanon Public Library has over 150,000 items, including books, eBooks, audio materials, and periodicals, and circulates nearly 400,000 items per year. The Library spends approximately $325,000 on new materials each year.
Service to children is a special mission at the Lebanon Public Library. One-third of the collection consists of children’s materials and one half of the circulation each year is of children’s books. Each year, a summer reading program offers incentives to children who read library books. Over 3000 children participate each summer.
Today, the Library continues to grow. The Library is developing a Technology Center to better serve the evolving technology needs of its patrons. Completion is expected in early 2015.
Andrew Carnegie's generous donation in 1903 helped create both a historic and educational landmark in Lebanon that will continue to serve the community for years to come.

Really nice library structurally. Never been in a library with louder staff. Conference rooms were full, so I left.
The people involved in running the libraries are fantastic! Very helpful as libraries are so modernized that there's no card index like old folks like me remember. I have only seen women helpers, but they move around the sites. They have been finding books from other libraries in the state...very efficient systems. The only thing that I didn't like is that authors come & go in popularity, so when I wanted to look for old favorites like Mitchner, there were none available.
Staff is super welcoming and friendly. I was informed that they had several study rooms that I could use in order to take my tests. Would definitely recommend this place to any student that needs a place to think.
Love this library! Everyone is so friendly, it's always clean and quiet inside, renovations they did are beautiful while still keeping the historic look
Beautiful historic Library with modern addition very comfortable chairs and plenty of plugins. Excellent Wi-Fi and friendly staff.
It's a bit of a tight squeeze, as is the case with many older buildings, but that doesn't stop this library from being fantastic. Friendly, welcoming staff, will help you find what you're looking for or get ahold of what you need if it isn't there. For folks worried about accessibility, there IS an elevator, never fear, and the building is close to the bus stop. The teen room always seems full of happy customers, so while I'm no expert, I think it's pretty safe to say that it's a great space. And you're right in the middle of Lebanon. Grab a book and take it to the park or the coffee shop across the street if it's cold out and enjoy your local library!
Great set up for relaxation or to study. Librarians seem to always do best to accommodate needs.
Beautiful new space. Staff is wonderful
