The thing about fruit and vegetables is that I am not their number one fan. They will never write a book featuring me as the central character. I will never try to get tickets to one of their sold-out shows. But I do recognize that they are a necessary evil so I have spent many hours seeking out the best places from which to procure them, and Trentwood Farms in Southgate is one of the top contenders for my affection. Mostly what I look for in a farm market is a short drive from the lair, a wide variety of ultra fresh produce and a meat case that is immaculately clean and stocked with very fresh meat. After being a meatcutter for 11 years, my standard for fresh meat is pretty high. Trentwood has all of the above--both locations do, really, but the Southgate location is larger and has a wider variety of produce as well as specialty grocery items. The shopping experience at Trentwood is above par. The store is laid out logically, the aisles and pathways are wide enough to fit down without having a cart standoff with other shoppers, and the people who work there seem to enjoy being very busy. They have Calder's Dairy items, a large deli, an olive bar of such beauty and cleanliness that I want to weep every time I shop there. The produce is top-notch--fresh, well-stocked and reasonably priced. The variety of items for sale there is on par with a smaller Westborn Market, really. The fresh meat case was full, fresh and attractive. The deli counter was as well. Both counters were busy, and that means lots of turnover in product so you know what you are buying is not dried out and awful. You won't have to settle for anything when you shop at Trentwood, you will always get the best of the best. The parking lot is ample, the store is well-maintained and clean, the checkout lines move quickly and there is an air of happy productivity in the store. It made me feel good about my shopping choices. It will probably make you feel good about yours, too.
Personally i've never been here, but uh actually i'm not sure.
