Our mission is to provide free, high-quality counsel in civil matters for poor and low-income individuals and families who cannot afford to pay an attorney, when basic human needs are at stake.
Legal Services of the Hudson Valley (LSHV) is the sole provider of free, comprehensive civil legal services in Westchester, Putnam, Dutchess, Orange, Ulster, and Sullivan Counties, and one of two providers in Rockland County. The assistance and advocacy we provide is the final hope for poor, low-income and recently unemployed Hudson Valley residents who need representation in non-criminal legal matters.
Our dedicated staff and committed team of pro bono (volunteer) attorneys handle a wide range of urgent legal needs. Legal Services of the Hudson Valley has programs that specialize in housing (eviction and foreclosure prevention), domestic violence, elder law, disability law (physical, mental and developmental disabilities), public benefits, healthcare, HIV/AIDS, Social Security and SSI, children’s law, and special education. Other programs include legal hotlines and phone-based services, community legal education, pro se assistance, support for other service providers, and advocacy. Our pro bono unit is well known state-wide for its ability to recruit, train and mentor hundreds of volunteer attorneys each year. The services of pro bono attorneys supplement the work of our staff and allow us to reach more individuals and households who need our help.
