Description

Shigung Miller’s Teaching Philosophy

“The Martial Arts can be integrated into every facet of life. The knowledge and experience of martial arts training can benefit the strongest, weakest, youngest or the oldest of students. Imparting this study of life is as individual as every living thing. The method of teaching them is carefully considered on an individual basis. What a student wants is not always what they need. My goal is to make all of my students a master in life and in martial arts.

What I’ve learned from my teachers, that I believe I also impart: how I want to be treated as a student, to be patient and kind to all types of learners, to continue to learn from teachers and students alike, and to question everything and take nothing for granted.”

Sensei Eldridge’s Teaching Philosophy

“There are 3 main attributes I impart on my students: self-confidence, self-discipline and self-defense. If students are confident, they cannot be intimidated physically or academically. If students have self-discipline, they will not give up on anything. If students are schooled in self-defense, they will be able to protect themselves in any situation, be it mental or physical.

I also strive to teach the 8 traditional values of the martial arts. Those values are courage, justice, generosity, politeness, honor, honesty, loyalty and compassion. I feel the most important one to master is courage. I explain to the students that real courage is not the lack of fear but the performance of one’s duty in spite of that fear. I teach them that without courage the other values will be impossible to embody. It takes courage to be fair in all things when others expect you to side with them.”

We love LVMA! We started last year with my son and now have my daughter in it. The instructors are very supportive and truly want to see the kids succeed. I would recommend this school to anyone interested in karate/kung fu
Great crew of instructors who are able to connect with students. My son really enjoys going to class. He is more focused and confident
Friendly and knowledgeable staff. My son loves coming to his lessons every week. I will definitely recommend LVMA.
This is an excellent school for martial arts. The instructors are kind and knowledgeable, and the atmosphere is very welcoming. It was wonderful to find a place that understands that T'ai Chi is more than just exercise for mind, body, and soul, but it is also the Boundless Fist, the supreme, ultimate defense, and a way of life. They do a great job of not leaving novices behind, while still providing valuable practice for seasoned martial artists. As with all endeavors, approach with a humble heart and an empty mind, and you will find there is a rich bounty of techniques to learn and master. As an older student who finally made it a point to make room in my life again for this valuable practice, I can gladly say that class quickly became one of the favorite parts of my week.
My 7 year old son and I started a few months ago as an father/son activity. I work a lot and I felt like I was not spending enough time with him. He was having some social issues in school and I didn’t want it to get worse as he got older. So, we visited and after a introduction session, we decided to sign up. It has been by far one of the best decisions we ever made. Over the past few months, my son’s social skills and self confidence have improved dramatically and we have a really fun, healthy activity to share for many years to come. I am 42 and have many nagging injuries from years of ice hockey and was concerned that I was not going to be able to do much.. and I was wrong. It has significantly helped my strength and flexibility and I feel better after classes. It has also been a wonderful stress relief from my job. EVERY ... EVERY instructor here is fantastic. They make classes fun and are extremely dedicated and helpful. I can not recommend LVMA enough. It truly was one of the best decisions i have ever made.
LVMA Emmaus is fantastic! The instructors are excellent--knowledgeable, patient, compassionate, and fun--and are really good at working with kids, adults, anyone who wants to learn. The community of students is amazing, really great people to be with. And the head instructor, Shifu Mark, is one of the best instructors I've seen and is truly committed to the success of each student, no matter where they're coming from or what their needs are. My son has been taking class here for over two years, and in addition to learning solid kung fu skills he's developed greater self-control, patience, and awareness that he can control his actions rather than be controlled by how others act around him.
I first enrolled my daughter in the Little Ninjas program for two reasons. First, since she had only ever been home and taught by me, I wanted her to be exposed to being in a class of other children her age, taught by someone else before being thrust into Kindergarten. Second, I noticed some anxieties in her that I hoped she could get past through learning martial arts. She fell in love with the class immediately and started building up her confidence. The class filled in some classroom things that she was not getting at home standing in line, learning not to be distracting or to be distracted by others, and she made a smooth transition into Kindergarten. As far as her anxieties, she started out as a child who when "put on the spot" even for good reasons asked to demonstrate, or being praised or if the class was doing something she didn't understand, she would shut down. She would stand still with tears in her eyes and you could see the panic she was feeling. By a year later in the beginner class, she had not only ceased to have instances like that, but also became one of the kids who would eagerly raise her hand to volunteer for demonstrations or stretching. That alone made our experience at LVMA priceless. As far as the actual business itself, I have been impressed by everything I have witnessed there. The program is designed to keep things interesting, but also practice things enough to improve. They teach more than just punches, kicks and wielding weapons. The owner, Shigung, is a kind and down to earth person who is involved in the business and will stand and chat with the parents and say "Hello" to the children. The instructors are good at balancing having fun and being kind to the students, with maintaining age appropriate expectations of ability and behavior. Even the graduation ceremonies are a blend of serious celebration of hard work and laid back fun. In the year and a half that we have been here, we have gained so much for our daughter, and I am so thankful to have found this place.
My son has been attending Kung fu at the Emmaus site since he was five years old. He began in the little ninjas program and has subsequently moved on to now be in the Peaceful Warriors class. He enjoys the instructors, and enjoys learning all of the stances and kicks as well as the valuable character lessons that the instructors review during every class. The lessons are powerful and can speak to all of us, and the instructors make it fun and relatable for the kids. Great experiences and would recommend for anyone considering giving Kung Fu a try!
Can’t say enough about their ethical standards. It is less “physical” school in the sense that full contact sparring is not the goal. It’s not MMA. If you are looking for self defense, strenuous exercise and constant challenge to improve, it’s here. Unhappy to see reviews from others regarding “cost”... it’s inexpensive compared to other schools. It’s a flat monthly rate and you can go to as many sessions in your ability level per month that you want, along with tutoring. You just gave to ASK. Not that difficult! So you get about 20 sessions a month for what amounts to less than the price of a lunch per session. Well worth it. As far as leaving for a year and not being able to retain everything, well gee whiz, it’s not a knitting class. Let’s get real. It’s a discipline. Sorry, I just see reviews on here blaming the school because one attendee may not be compatible with the course regimen. That’s like giving an amusement park a zero because you don’t like amusement parks. The students in the classes do their best to help every student learn each week, as much as the teachers do, and that’s saying a lot. You get out of it what you put into it as well, ultimately your success is determined by you.
