For over 25 years, the Lehman College Adult Learning Center (ALC) has been one of the leading adult education programs in New York City. Every year, we provide approximately 600 adults, primarily from the Bronx, with free classes in Basic Education (BE), English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), GED® /High School Equivalency (HSE) Test Preparation, and College Transition. Our educational approaches value the diversity of ALC students, who come primarily from nearby Bronx neighborhoods and reflect an inclusive mix of Latina, African, Asian, and European heritages.
Students come to the Adult Learning Center for a variety of purposes. Some come to learn English or improve their English. Others come to improve their reading and writing, or to obtain a HSE diploma. In their time with us, students make gains in many areas of their lives. Some begin to read the newspaper for the first time or help their children with homework. Others make more informed decisions regarding their health. We help many students pass the GED® --over 70 students earn their HSE diplomas each year-- as well as prepare students for college through the academic and counseling components of the college transition program.
