Les Enfants d’Abord is a non-profit organization that provides supplemental youth education and community health programs in Thiès, Senegal. Public schools in Thiès are overcrowded and underfunded.
This year, one of our feeder schools has 1,006 students and only 19 teachers. Students sit at plywood tables without the space or supplies necessary to take notes. Students are not engaged.
Les Enfants d’Abord, French for “Children First”, was founded in 2016 with the goal of giving students opportunities for self-driven, experiential education.
In January 2018, we will begin our science fair unit. Students will pose questions about the world around them and work in teams to find answers to those questions. We will follow the Scientific Method, which has been proven to develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills. The program will culminate when students present their findings to family and friends at a fair. In addition to celebrating the learning that has taken place, the science fair will give students formal public speaking experience, something new for most of them. We have also found that family involvement is integral to long-term student investment.
Our programs are dynamic and undergo continuous evaluation through assessment that track academic progress and family and community feedback, to insure that we are serving our community in the best way possible.
Our organization is young, and our staff is currently working with educators to develop new experiential learning opportunities for our students. Like the science fair, all our programs will enable our students to learn through doing; and they will develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
We achieve the best results by engaging our partners. We partner with academic institutions, international organizations, and community health organizations that are at the top of their respective fields. In 2017 to date, we have worked with 50 children and their families.
Our 2018 fundraising efforts will allow us to continue to build on our existing programs, purchase adequate school supplies and nutritious student meals, and engage qualified teachers and staff.
