Historic neighborhood grocery and candy shop on the corner of Tremont St and W 8th St.
In Mrs. Lew's own words and handwriting (many years ago):
" In the spring of 1930 Mr. C.L. Eckerman started a business of butchering by going out to a farm and butchering a hog, bringing it home to 804 Tremont. He then cut it up and wrapped it and went from house to house and sold all of it. The next day he went to the farm again and butchered a beef and did the same thing. He did this for awhile and people started calling for more meat.
In 1931 Mr. Eckerman decided to take one of their bedrooms and make it into a neighborhood grocery store and call it Eckerman's Market. It continued to grow and groceries, candy and school supplies were added. In 1938 the song and wife took it over and in 1939 added on making it double in size.
In 1949 it was sold to Mr. & Mrs. O. Lewellan. In 1950 it was again remodeled. Since then we have enjoyed 39 years of good business. Many students of Lincoln school come back to see us and bring their children in to shop. It has been and still is an enjoyable 39 years."
