Lincoln Park Academy

Description

Lincoln Park Academy is a public magnet school located in Fort Pierce, Florida. Commonly referred to as simply "LPA", the school is academically geared, offering Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, dual-enrollment, and pre-engineering course schedules. It was ranked 178th in the "Challenge Index" of United States high schools in the Washington Post in 2014.HistoryThe history of Lincoln Park Academy can be traced back to 1906 when families in the Woodbine area in Ft. Pierce requested a teacher. The first school, an old school supply building, was on North Eighth Street. The school had five teachers, eight grades and was open for seven months a year. It was rather poor with no teachers, including the principal having no more than a high school education. There were no teaching materials, not even a dictionary. The citizens were determined to have a high school. To understand how ambitious this was, there was no full four-year Negro high school south of Palatka, Florida. In 1921 there were only 18 Negro pupils listed in 12th grade in three unaccredited high schools. In September 1923 Lincoln Park Academy opened as a junior high school with five ninth graders. When a new superintendent, Mr. Riggs, was elected he met with a group of citizens at St. Paul AME Church. He told the crowd that they would need to pledge $1,600 to approve the senior high school. Although Superintendent Riggs was skeptical, the citizens paid more than $2,600 during the term. The school board approved the senior high school, thus Lincoln Park Academy was born. During the 1925–1926 term, a new building was completed at a cost of $10,000. It included four classrooms, an office, a library, and an auditorium. Principal Espy put partitions in the classrooms, doubling the capacity. The school year was also expanded to eight months.

I graduated from Lincoln Park Academy in 2017 after going there from 9th -12th grade, and honestly the education I recieved from the school was phenomenal and has helped me in my S.T.E.M. courses in college. I had the chance to be the student of excellent teachers who really wanted their students to learn no matter how hard the material was Mr. Gray, Mrs. Reid, Mr. Shields, Mr. Fig, Mrs. Jensen, Mr. Mathison, Ms. Forbus, Mrs. Larson, Mr. Louidor, Ms. Brome. The reason this school is a three star rather than a five star is because of the administration. I have never met such demeaning individuals in my life. The deans for both the middle school and the highschool had an air of superiority which came out when they would suddenly change the rules more than half-way through the school year and how often they patronized students. Even the teachers felt like they were treated like children, and these are superb educators who have proven their worth through how well their students performed in their classes, and standardized assessments. The office staff was rude, and I say this because I saw and heard one of them talk down to a teacher with a condensending tone simply because he did not know how school organization accounts worked mind you it was his first year at the LPA. To end on a happier note, I have found some of my lifelong friends here and was afforded learning opportunities that cannot be found at any school in the district. I would recommend the IB program for students who wish to go to college or partake in a career of healthcare, or in STEM; otherwise please don't waste your highschool experience.
This school is very bad please do not send your child to this school as a former student of LPA it’s a horrible school to send your child to, the teachers and staff are rude and they don’t care and also their is not a lot of choices when it come to picking classes the school is always dirty and also the dress code is insane.
This school is great, but the greatness comes almost entirely from its teaching staff. Supplies/books are limited to none and there is little support past your teachers themselves. As a past student it is a surprisingly gilded school that needs to start updating to sustain its strong rep.
As someone who goes to this school it is good for academics but they need to pay more attention to the students mental health.
I think that this school is excellent for academics. However teachers need to remember that "to teach is to touch a life forever" and that what makes them a great teacher is encouraging /lifting struggling students not only praising the academically excellent students. Teaching, like parenting is a nurturing and frustrating job and those who do it are not adequately compensated for molding the leaders of the future. Teachers like Lisa Hevner should not sarcastically ask a weak student if they have plans for the next academic year implying that the student is not college worthy. Every child has promise and teachers should strive to unleash the true potential of their students, not continuously demean them with condescending remarks . Simple- put yourself in that child's shoes? Would you like to be treated that way at any stage f your life? Teachers like Mr Gray, Mr Fig , Mr. Albert ,Ms Jensen , Ms. Gonzalez are worthy of emulation at Lincoln Park Academy. They truly put their heart into what they do and make a significant difference in the lives of their students!! #lincolnparkacademy
I graduated here in 2013 and have attended from 6th-12th grade. At first I went along with a lot of the negative language of "LPA SUX." They always focused on academics first compared to sports and the arts. Looking back, I am grateful that I attended LPA. I have had some incredible teachers who really have a passion for teaching and pushing their students. These include : Mr. Gray, Mr. Albert, Ms. Gonzalez, Ms. Norris. Mrs. Reid. LPA definitely prepared me for college and I was successful. Although, I'm currently pursuing an international DJ career, I could've still gone to medical school thanks to the foundation at LPA that put me in a position to reach my goals.
They let a child back into the classroom that had been charged with aggravated assault. He was in a criminal diversion program. This is supposed to be an academic magnet school so I have no idea why this student's criminal behavior entitled him to continue attending. Google "lincoln park academy mascara" for more info. There is video and back story.
LOVE THIS SCHOOL! MR. GRAY IS THE BEST TEACHER I'VE EVER HAD IN MY 17 YEARS OF SCHOOL!
