Lincoln Square Synagogue

Description

The Lincoln Square Synagogue is located at 180 Amsterdam Avenue between West 68th and 69th Streets in the Lincoln Square neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City. Founded in 1964, the physical location of the congregation has changed several times. The most recent move took place in January 2013. The new building is the largest synagogue to be built in New York City in over 50 years. The current senior Rabbi is Rabbi Shaul Robinson.HistoryThe Lincoln Square Synagogue was founded as a congregation in 1964 by Rabbi Shlomo Riskin. In the late 1960s, the first Orthodox Jewish women's tefillah (prayer) group was created, on the holiday of Simhat Torah at Lincoln Square Synagogue. The travertine building it formerly occupied at 200 Amsterdam Avenue, just 250 feet from its current building, was built in 1970, and was designed by the firm of Hausman & Rosenberg. Because it had outgrown that building, the synagogue moved to a new building designed by Cetra/Ruddy in mid-January 2013, after a development process that lasted seven years. The move was the result of a land swap between the synagogue and the development company American Continental Properties, in which the congregation received $20 million to aid in paying for the construction of the new building. Despite this, and the $10 million raised by the congregation, construction was held up in 2010 because of a lack of funds, which was made up by a single contribution of $20 million from an anonymous donor. The old building at 200 Amsterdam will be replaced by an apartment building.

"LSS is a diverse and vibrant Modern Orthodox Congregation that provides religious, social, and educational services and outreach to the unique Jewish community of the Upper West Side. Beautiful space. Many floors, each one holds a different event. There is also an outdoor space on the roof that is wonderful
Beautiful synagogue with daily minyanim!
Beautiful worship services four different minyans on Shabbat morning, beautiful new building, friendly congregation compared with other large synagogues. The congregation adheres to Orthodox Jewish tradition but welcomes Jews of all traditions and tries to make them feel at home. The rabbinical and cantorial staff are warm, friendly, and accepting.
Beautiful synagogue. Have gone recently for daily shacharis for Kaddish. Friendly Rabbi and members have come over and said hello and welcome me. Decent A/C in the summer!
I made the awful mistake of going here for yom kippur. The rabbi at the end of the holiday wanted to have enough people in the room for a minyan - so he delayed the shofar blowing by 20 minutes to do a kiddush and minyan while 200 people consequentially delayed their fast that much longer. One of the most disrespectful acts I’ve experienced on what is already a difficult and important day - and made even worse by when he smirked at how clever he was. I think it speaks to a truly poor character and a weak leader that cannot inspire even 10 people to stay behind....
Beautiful shul and accommodations. Seems to have no problem getting together plenty of people for a mincha-maariv minyan.
Award Winning Design - Building Fuses Time Honored Tradition & Sleek Modern Architecture Into a Unique Contemporary Worship Space
Needed a place to daven in between scheduled times. Guard would not allow us entry to the shul. Disappointing.
Enjoyed the Shabbat morning davening. Stimulating d'var Torah, small kiddush and nice new building
Lots of nice events though i prefer to attend smaller shuls for religious services
