Litchfield is a city in Montgomery County, Illinois, United States. The population was 6,939 at the 2010 census, and 6,588 in 2009 and 7,012 in 2015. It is located in south central Illinois, south of Springfield and northeast of Metro-East.HistoryIn 1853, the town was developed when the Terre Haute, Alton and St. Louis Railroad came through the area. It was named for E. B. Litchfield, a founder.
