Early Literacy. Lifelong Success.
Join us in giving all children an equal chance at lifelong success.
LBL was developed by PHFE WIC staff with support from literacy specialists to address the challenges of school readiness for children in low income families by providing parental guidance and education on early childhood literacy and by disseminating age-appropriate development materials, books and activities for parents to do with their children at home. This program, which is women into the already established and highly effective Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) platform is designed to create stimulating home environments and a “culture” that fosters literacy prior to school entry in the homes of WIC families.
Our mission is to deliver an early literacy program at WIC sites in every
county in California with a goal that children will be better prepared to enter
kindergarten and increase parent engagement in their children's education.
The neighborhood WIC site is one of the few places that young families visit regularly from birth to age 5. Therefore, families can benefit from school readiness interventions that begin long before school-age. With appropriate funding, the Little by Little program is in a unique position to encourage early literacy behaviors in the home, thereby significantly improving the school readiness of children from low-income families.
