********Construction Warning********
There are three major construction projects currently going on in the vicinity of the Little Free Library. Three houses have been torn down with three new ones being built in their places. There is a lot of heavy equipment and contractor traffic in the area. Please use caution when visiting the Little Free Library!
*****************************************
Located across the street from N21 W29812 Glen Cove Road, this Little Free Library (LFL) is just a small part of the LFL movement. Started in Wisconsin, LFLs have spread throughout the world! Be sure to check out the main LFL page (littlefreelibrary.org) for more information and to see a global map showing all LFL locations.
The Little Free Library on Glen Cove Road has two volunteer stewards. Holly Paulsen, who lives across the street from the LFL, is a retired math and computer science educator from the Waukesha Public School District. Stacey Paulsen, Holly's daughter, is a former Spanish teacher and high school counselor. Both have a lifelong love of reading. At last count, Holly had over 3000 books in her house! Stacey also has a huge amount of books, but hers are too unorganized to count. :)
Why a Little Free Library?
Stacey attended UW-Waukesha's Festival of Books last year. On her way out, she saw a man presenting a video about Little Free Libraries. Infected with his enthusiasm, Stacey stopped at a nearby table and entered a raffle to win a LFL. Surprise! A few days later, she received a call saying that the Little Free Library that was on display was now hers!
Having grown up on Glen Cove Road, Stacey thought her parents' back lot would be the perfect place for a Little Free Library! Back in the day, it seemed like all of the neighbors on a Glen Cove Road knew each other, kept an eye on each other's kids, and were quick to lend a helping hand. Even in these busy times, some of that spirit still resides on Glen Cove Road. We hope that our Little Free Library, which is now YOUR Little Free Library, will contribute to our neighborhood's sense of community.
As soon as the LFL went up, the buzz began! (A big thanks goes to David Rofritz and Ted Groszcyk for installing the LFL!) Neighbors out for a run or a walk with their dogs stopped to ask questions. Others started going through their own books to find a few to donate. A spark had been lit!
As educators, the Paulsens have seen first-hand the importance of reading. No matter what age you are, books can take you on an adventure, teach you a new skill, make you laugh, help you appreciate another point of view, inspire you to try something new, and so much more! This LFL is for all ages....kids, teens, and adults. Depending on the traffic/usage, we may add on an addition to separate the books into different age groups, but for now, they will be all together. Visitors may need to do a little sorting from time to time.
How does the Little Free Library work?
There is a great little video on our FB page that shows how a LFL works. It is pretty simple. Take a book ~ Return a book! The collection will always be changing, which is exciting! You don't have to donate a book every time that you take one. You can later return the same book. That also counts! There may also be times when you donate a few of your own all at once. As stewards of the LFL, Holly and Stacey will keep an eye on the collection and rotate books as needed. Anyone, however, can donate books!
How do I donate a book?
If you have one or two books that you would like to donate, you can just leave them in the LFL! We have some special labels that we would like you to add to the inside cover of the book(s), if you have time. One says, "Always a gift. Never for sale." Even though you can't technically steal a free book, this message is to discourage booksellers from buying books taken from LFLs. The other label says, "Please add your name if you enjoyed this book. (Optional! This is just for fun!)" If you don't have time or can't find the labels in the box on the LFL's post, don't worry! The stewards will catch it at some point and do it for you!
If you have several books to donate, please contact Holly and Stacey at [email protected] to set up a drop off time. We will take care of adding the labels. If you want to go ahead and write your name in the books, we will put the second label above your name.
What is that picnic table for?
Please feel free to sit at the picnic table and read a book...by yourself, to your child, or with your friends!
What about those intimidating, barking dogs?
The Paulsen dogs bark. A lot. That was taken into consideration when selecting a location and installing the LFL. If the dogs are out, please don't stop and hang around in their sight line. Please just move along quickly when coming and going. You should be able to stand at the LFL and use the picnic table without a problem. Also, when they start barking, we do try to get them back into the house...albeit with mixed success. We are working on it! ;)
We hope that you enjoy your Little Free Library!
