Beautiful hike, beautiful creek, very wet in rainy season. Boots or shoes that allow water are best. Crossing the creek 3x. Sadly the Trails across the little Lost Creek are overgrown. It’s worth the Hike from South parking Lot B walked to North parking Lot B across the creek around. The only reason why I gave it four stars is because the paths beyond the creek were very overgrown.
It was a nice hike. Colors were probably gorgeous a week or so ago. But it was 67degrees and beautiful!
If you can get away, this trail is great. Only two challenging ascents with two mild to moderate descents. Great trail to run and get away from the crowds and be one with nature and God.
Great for hiking! This is my favorite spot for relaxing or quick walks. The multiple entry points boast accessible trailheads with gorgeous views. My favorite trail photo is just off of the parking lot, but feels far removed and quiet nonetheless - and it immediately immerses me with its colorful vistas and that lovely scent of Goldenrod. So peaceful!
Doing the southernmost B access area makes for a long 6 mike hike when taking into account the elevation gain over 900 feet. Bring water if it’s a hot day. Some of the trails can be very steep and rocky which make for some unsure footing. Grassy areas abound so ticks and chiggers can be heavy in summer. However the views are pretty great and the ridgetop meadows are worth a visit.
Literally my favorite place to go and get away for some peace and quiet. The major MDC access trails and parking lots are well maintained. Beyond that you're on your own. Bring water, snacks and bug spray. The cell service over the years has gotten better, but it's not 100% reliable. If you need clearly marked trails and other amenities this is probably not the right spot for you. Depending on the season you will encounter hunters so it helps to be aware and bring your orange.
From the South Parking Lot on Hwy B to Little Lost Creek and back is 9500 steps approximately, your results may vary. The descent is one of the longest continuing and steepest declines in the State, and it's also the way back. Elevation is 825 at the top and 585 at the first creek crossing, 240 ft descent/ascent within 1/3 of a mile. The "loop" trail is something someone made up to connect other trails into one, nothing is marked. The whole area is a unique geographical splendor The giant canyon gullies are just as big as western US canyons, but these are tree covered. The trees here are very old, many are on the huge level. The terrain is unlike any place in Missouri. At one time the middle valley was nothing but a giant grassy meadow, like an oasis among these near verticals that surround it with a big pavilion. They have since allowed it to grow over, which in my humble opinion took away a very special and unique character to this special place, a very special place indeed. Be in good physical health for the hike, knee wise you'll burn some muscles on these slopes. They allow horseback riding on the south Hwy B parking lot trail and on the bottom 1/4 stretch of the descent portion of the trail, it is very badly torn up and just left that way for the Trail Maid? ...in short they left a big trace on the trail where you are asked to leave no trace
Found some scorpions which was awesome. Beautiful spring fed swimming hole too. Nice spot and far enough away that most people won't put forth the effort to go.
Really nice hike on reasonably wide trails that were not overgrown. Definitely wear bugspray.
Old trail not properly maintained. But good for a quiet camping in the nature. It's just off the road and good for a night camp.
