Loch Ness Monster (roller coaster)

Description

The Loch Ness Monster is a steel roller coaster at Busch Gardens Williamsburg, noted at the time of its opening in 1978 as the world's tallest and fastest roller coaster, as well as the first coaster with two interlocking loops. The Loch Ness remains the only roller coaster with two interlocking loops — other similar designs having been dismantled. In addition to the loops, which link over one of the park's water features, the design includes a helix tunnel, two lift hills and a 114ft drop. The ride sits within the park's Scottish-themed Heatherdown, relates the legend of the Loch Ness monster and suggests the serpent inhabits its underwater caves. The ride is classified as Coaster Landmark by American Coaster Enthusiasts and marked its 35th anniversary in 2013.LayoutThe ride begins with a pre-recorded welcome, departs the station and ascends a 130ft lift hill with a small, tight turn before descending 114ft toward the park's Rhine River. A large upward hill crosses over the park's 'Land of the Dragons', bringing the ride to the first of two interlocking loops, after which the ride accelerates through a descending, spiraling tunnel. The train descends 2.75 spiraling revolutions before exiting the specially lit tunnel, subsequently ascending its second lift hill, making a wide turn and dropping into the second loop - ascending a last time before stopping. *The lights in the tunnel have not been turned on for years. Many of the current employees aren't even aware that there are lights in the tunnel yet many long time fans of the ride fondly recall them.

This historic coaster has some intense moments and can nock you around a bit but it’s worth the experience. One of the only interlocking looping coasters left in existence! The loops are pretty intense and the enclosed helix is really cool! I can’t say I would want to reride this coaster a bunch but there are a ton of fun moments to experience.
This ride was surprisingly much better than I expected it to be. I figured because of it's age it'd be a rough ride but it was nice and smooth. It was the only ride we had practically no wait for as well. It's on the older side so the ride itself isn't too exciting.
A lovely and smooth ride by the water. I’d say it’s half or even a third of the thrill level of the Apollo’s Chariot but more variations tunnel, ride over the water, loops, etc. Overall a very fun experience and not too thrilling; I feel refreshed after the ride:
This rollercoaster is honestly really enjoyable and smooth for its age, built in the 70s and built to last! The interlocking loops are so unique and satisfying to look at.
Underrated roller coaster that is amazing! On top of being a coaster icon, it is a great way to get introduced to loops/inversions as this was my first! Pretty good coaster overall and pretty underrated, as I mentioned earlier.
As others have said recently, this used to be a a smooth, fun ride but is now rough and uncomfortable - hard to enjoy. My teenagers said the same so I know it’s not just me getting old. Maybe time for some new cars and/or work on the track?
We left the ride in pain instead of excitement. Rode this ride about 2-3 years ago and it was a smooth and fun ride, but not anymore! We were so excited to go on it and left so disappointed that we will not ride it again. The belt taking you up was loud and kind of jerked you and the entire ride whips you side to side and jerks you, where you knock you ear into the harness and my daughter’s face on the side got knocked into The harness. It seems to have fallen in disrepair. Also, the girl attendant pushed the harness into my stomach and she did not appear to be Busch Gardens friendly!
A great ride for an old Arrow coaster. Has gotten a little rough especially in the front . Could use some smoothing out in spots. Would love to see some sort of effect in the tunnel section.
The 1st roller coaster I've ever been on that took me upside down. That was 20 years ago, I will always love the Loch Ness Monster, I remember way back when they had the water in the tank that bubbled and me and my brother Swore we saw nessie inside moving around. That's back when the lines were 2 hours long and we had time to pay attention to the scenery. I'm sad because I know that it's not going to be around for many more years being that it's always having maintenance done and every time I'm there it's not open because of issues. I don't want to see it fall to the same fate as Big Bad Wolf, another iconic ride. Long live the Loch Ness monster!
Awesome classic Arrow coaster, althlugh a bit rough through the loops. Definitely worth riding, and it’s funny to think it was once the world’s tallest roller coaster. Don’t ride in the back if you want to avoid being jostled around a bit. The middle or toward the front is the best way to go.
