Rare and Unique Sea Glass Jewelry
Sea Glass is a catch-all name for glass that has been surf tumbled, man made, from rivers or even fresh water lakes. Genuine Surf Tumbled Sea Glass, is just that but to tell the difference you need to know what to look for. Real sea glass has several features.
1. Roundness The rounder it is the older it is, it takes a minimum of 20 years of wave and sand action to create even a small flat piece with rounded edges and some surface crystals
2. Bubbles, real sea glass has bubbles inside that are created by the saturation of salt water into the glass which creates a reaction that causes the crystal-like frosty surface that is so desireable
3. Crystals, the frosty surface described above, a type of crystalliation
I have now seen man made glass that looks very very similar to the real thing. You need to look very closely and ask questions when buying "sea glass " jewelry. That frosty looking surface could be just scratches, look for the bubbles inside....above all ask the seller where the glass came from.. large lots of similar sizes and colors are usually suspect as manmade, the real thing comes in all shapes and sizes and colors vary greatly. I use ONLY GENUINE SURF TUMBLED SEA GLASS in my jewelry and only ARGENTIUM .925 STERLING SILVER.
