The Long Island Explorium encourages visitors to explore and play together in our hands-on interactive maker space rich with nautically themed science based exhibits and activities. While our focus is children ages 2-12 and their caregivers, we welcome visitors of all ages.
The Long Island Explorium was launched in 2004 as “The Children’s Maritime Museum at Port Jefferson” (CMM) by a group of local residents seeking a family-friendly educational experience.
Families exploring the fun and interactive hands-on exhibits at the Maritime Explorium at Port Jefferson will enjoy the excitement of scientific discovery, develop a broadened cultural awareness and experience a sense of artistry while learning about Long Island's rich and varied maritime heritage.
Navigation Station: A custom designed interactive computer program that allows visitors to pilot a boat around the Port Jefferson harbor, controlling direction and speed. Visitors can tour the waters and click on various areas to learn more about that particular space.
Pilot Houses: Design codes and ciphers and send messages using a pulley system.
Rice Boat: A popular space for our young visitors, our sensory rice boat helps our friends predict and measure in a fun and interactive way.
Virtual Submarine: Steer through the waters of Port Jefferson and investigate the underwater plant and animal life using our custom designed computer programs.
The Ship's Hull: Learn to tie knots, see patterns and build marble mazes below deck. Lift cargo using our block and tackle and design your own pulley system.
Rock and Roll: Load the cargo balls onto the barge and find out if you are fast enough to get to the next port on time.
Zig Zag Zip: Steer your own sailing ship to see how boats sail after different angles to the wind.
Where am I?: Make a rescue at sea by plotting your course.
