Lookout Mountain Park

Description

Lookout Mountain Park is a Denver Mountain Park located around 12mi west of downtown Denver overlooking Golden, Colorado. It consists of 65.7acre of evergreen wilderness atop Lookout Mountain, named for its being a favored lookout point of the native Ute Indian tribe. Lookout Mountain Park is the burial site of the internationally famous western frontiersman William Frederick "Buffalo Bill" Cody, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.Early historyIn 1889 a group of prominent area businessmen and residents proposed the idea of creating a mountain park as a getaway point for people from the urban city. After a lively competition between Lookout Mountain and Eden Park in Jefferson County west of Denver, Lookout Mountain was chosen for the honor. Plans were commissioned from famed architect Frederick Law Olmsted, the designer of Central Park in New York City, to create a naturalistic resort park for the area public to enjoy. Although the area for the original Lookout Mountain Park, as it became commonly known, was acquired by the syndicate, little manmade construction took place since finances were stymied by the Silver Crash of 1893. After languishing due to this and the deaths of its aging stockholders, Lookout Mountain Park was acquired by businessman Rees Vidler, who constructed a funicular incline railway to the top along with other attractions.

This park is excellent and has a Nature Center that is very educational and comfortable for all ages. The volunteers were super nice along with the ranger who supervises them. Shout out to the volunteer who went to the University of FL …GO GATORS - she was super nice as was the other lady volunteer! There is a lot of information on the local wildlife and hiking trails. The area is well maintained and beautiful views. Take the time to visit this center and bring the kids. It’s also super dog friendly. There is a kids area and a place for us elders to rock in rocking chairs.
The sunset, the view, and the peace that come with visiting this wonderful place. Overall, I highly recommend this place! It’s definitely worth the drive if you’re driving up from Denver! There are many trails and safe parking lots. The people that come here are very respectful and QUIET!!! When it’s this peaceful, it helps with the view and scenery!
This is a very nice place to visit. The park has a museum for Buffalo Bill. The park also includes his burial site. There are great views and many pull off on the road for pictures. A lot of walking trails, look for mountain goats, there are also bathrooms and parking. While you are here go and see the mansion on the top of the mountain, it an amazing place with a gift shop below. Closed on Mondays.
Someone recommended coming to this location before we left Colorado to go back home to California, so we stopped... Best decision... It was so AMAZINGLY GORGEOUS up here... The view of Colorado from this location was "BREATH TAKING"... Definitely, recommend anyone In Colorado visiting or passing by to stop at this location... You will be happy you did... The pictures you can take here are forever "Memorable"...
We drove the Lariat Loop and hiked a mile or so at Windy Gulch that's not quite the right name - Windy something.... We took a couple of hours to go through, stopping a few times for the views. We were impressed with the bicyclers - looks like a hard ride, but everyone seemed to enjoy it - cars were good about going around the bicyclists, which doesn't happen everywhere. The switchbacks were fun and views spectacular. We came back the next day to check out Buffalo Bill's Museum as well.
The views are absolutely stunning! People occasionally paraglide over the road, which enhances the experience. Frankly, it's Colorado beauty at its finest. Enjoy time with friends and family as you savor your environment and play some kickass music.
Spectacular sometimes nerve wracking long mountainous drive from Golden, CO to the top of Lookout Mountain. The view from the top allows you to see for miles: the mountains to the left, downtown Denver to the right. Never knew this is where Buffalo Bill was buried. There is also a museum there, however, we only visited his grave. Not sure why he seems to be so highly honored when he slaughtered so many buffalo, but it is important to always remember history so that some events are NOT repeated.
Great views and was lucky to find it not crowded at all. Perfect weather and a pretty nice drive. Watch out for all the idiots on bicycles. Most on this day were determined to screw with traffic.
There's nothing like a 180° panoramic view of not only Denver, but also the valley surrounding her! Excellent vantage point facing east that permits views of the suburbs & communities that nestle themselves right up by the foothills ... I've been up here numerous times for the last 60 years & I never tire of its magical view ... a Must-See
View was truly awesome. Nice parking area. We really enjoyed it even if it was a bit touristy
