Nature inspires me. Rocks, trees, water, and flowers have hidden colors that call to be teased out in a painting. I spend a good deal of time at our family home in Yosemite National Park, which feeds my creativity.
Interesting shapes and bright colors influence my choices. A fascinating shape is often the first thing that attracts me to a subject. When painting, I like to look beyond the colors typically associated with the subject and pursue the feeling, rather than the photographic detail of it.
Watercolor is my preferred medium, because it lends itself to beautiful layering and blending. I am currently using liquid watercolors that enable me to achieve intense colors while retaining the ability to create delicate washes.
My mother was a watercolorist, and I spent time both learning from her and taking workshops with her. I have had workshops from fine instructors such as Jane Burnham, Stephen Quiller, John Salminen, Dale Laitinen, and Mike Bailey.

As a child, I was captivated by fairy stories in which small creatures live extraordinary lives within our world but invisible to us. As an adult, I understand how empowering it is for children to imagine a magical realm in which the tiniest of animals live wholly independent and heroic lives. Beatrix Potter and Brian Jacques shared my captivation with this miniature universe. Potter created hers with watercolors and ink. Jacques brought his to life through prose. I animate mine with the tools of my theater costumer's trade: fabric, thread, needle, and props.
My mice are 'larger than life' than their real life counterparts, making it more fun to imagine their parallel lives existing within the walls of our own. When things go bump in the night, dismiss real-life worries of intruders or vermin and visit the world in miniature that my mice inhabit.
