Mammoth Museum at the Hayden Cabin

About

Open Memorial weekend through September annually. Closed in winter.
This program is operated under special use permit with the Inyo National Forest.

Description

The Mammoth Museum at the Hayden Cabin is run by the Southern Mono Historical Society which is a non-profit organization. We rely on funding from the Town of Mammoth Lakes and Mono County plus donations and memberships. The museum is only open from Memorial Day weekend through the end of September and closed in winter. There are many interesting historical exhibits which teach visitors about Mammoth Lakes' history. We host several community events throughout the summer months and the outdoor venue is available for rent for weddings, receptions, reunions, parties, celebrations of life and gatherings.

Note there is a suggested donation of $5, in cash. They can't accept a CC donation. It is on nice grounds next to Mammoth creek. Across the creek there are people fishing, there are some small hiking trails. The cabin itself has historical artifacts inside from the family that used it as a summer cabin. Worth seeing if you have time.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNoPrice for adult entryFree
A great little piece of history which is a must see. Seems like these were the people that got the whole thing kicked off before the McCoys came and built up Mammoth Mountain ski area! The museum curator was very knowledgeable and told us all kinds of really interesting facts about how it got started here. The Hayden's drove there Ford car up the mountain to get a cedar and pull it down off the mountain to build the very cabin that you can stand in. Complete with a hatch door to the master bedroom and the kitchen that was very up-to-date in the 1920s. Even if all you do is walk through and gain a little history It's interesting to see the amazing maps that were drawn by hand! If we get a chance we will be going back

The experience I had at this Museum was better then any other Museum. The tour guides where every knowledgeable about the cabin, the man that built it and his family along with the surrounding area. My family and I had a great time.
We stopped here while on a road trip. Cute little cabin along the creek with cool old photos and stuff
If you're looking for a *truly* rustic wedding venue then look no further! Hayden Cabin is a beautiful location in the heart of Mammoth Lakes. It's historic, picturesque, and a classic location. You'll have to provide your own bathroom, tent, tables, chairs, sound system, aka everything. The location is still work the 5 stars in our book!
This was a nice museum. It is free to enter, but donations are welcomed. We learned many facts about the history of the cabin as well as the area.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNoPrice for adult entryFree
