Another gorgeous spot to go hiking. There are a bunch of trails of trails... there are spots with grills to cook on,and pinic at. Dogs are allowed only on leash or will be fined. also porter potties to use as well.
Peaceful place! Many lovely views, both paved as well as rustic trails. We come here often and never tire of the beauty here. You have to try the dam trail at least once during late afternoon close to sunset the view is spectacular! Parking lot for that trail is just off of rte 6, east of the airport.
This place has quite a bit nostalgia attached to it for me! Grew up hiking the Nipmuck Trail and swimming in Bicentennial Pond. It is peaceful, quiet and a chill spot to relax.
Great park. Many miles of hiking trails and wonderful paddling opportunities. Always very clean. One down side is you can't swim in the lake. The power lines that run through the park are a little bit of a bummer but don't take away from it much. Great wildlife from a kayak! I saw a beaver, deer, and several great blue herons.
Very nice park with hiking trails ranging from pretty tough blue trail to relaxed the paved path along top of the levy. Decent amount of parking and restroom facilities porto-potties. The lake is beautiful. Warning: in late September we encountered a Timber Rattlesnake one of only two venomous snakes in the region it was on the yellow trail only a few hundred yards from the parking area. It came onto the trail and was very aggressive, so be careful with children and pets during the warmer months.
This is a favorite spot for a great many people. Lots of acreage with trails for hiking. Many love to jog or walk the dam. Dog walkers abound. There are areas for picnicking, a baseball field, and beautiful scenery. You can canoe, kayak, boat and fish in the summer with restrictions since it is a public water supply. There is also ice fishing in the winter. It is great for birderwatchers also, there is even a great heron that loves to come for lunch below the dam.No swimming is allowed.
Beautiful reservoir not for swimming, nor motor boating that can leave oily sludge along the shores of the area's drinking water. Allowed are small slow fishing boats, kayaks, canoes, waterboards. Easy to moderate trails, depending on where along the lakes. Great place to walk dogs. Interesting feature changes throughout the seasons. Fields and forestry are well maintained year round, so appreciated!
Out for a late January bicycle ride around the back side of the lake opposite of the dam and airport. Not many people frequent this area of the park as it's not accessible from the main picnicking areas, but located off a dead end road. Large parking lot/turn around with trail head maps usually available in the message board. It's a nice peaceful area lots of areas to explore and many good fishing locations. Look up .. I live less than a mile away and it's beautiful. I love walking there! Restrooms: Port-o-potties in the parking areas. Dog-friendliness: Always great for dogs! Picnic area: A few picnic tables.
Besides it being the park we're my wife and I really fell for each other plus, our first kiss was there 2 years ago as of writing this, it was absolutely wonderful to be able to have our small wedding at the pavilion area of the park. Our photographers absolutely adored the natural beauty and took a good amount of shots of the scenery in between our shoots lol. I don't blame them, the park offers breathtaking scenery that imho, captures a small sampling of natural beauty of Eastern CT. Its wonderful as much as beautiful anytime of the year. Nature walks, fishing, boating, picnics, cook outs, playing out in the feild areas, and/or just to enjoy the splendors of nature can be done here. I've been coming to the park for a very long time and it never has gotten old/stale to walk along the water or deep into the wooded trails. Instead of going on and on about the park, I say just go yourself and see how wonderful it is for yourself.
