Originally housed in a Mare Island coal shed that was transformed in 1999 by Tim Rose to art studios for 18 artists. In 2018 we moved to 110 Pintado St.
The Coal Shed Art Studios is home to 19 artists working in disciplines which span mosaic, sculpture, photography, portraiture, pottery, painting, illustration, printmaking, fiber arts and installation art. The Coal Sheds were built in 1902 to store the fuel essential to power Civil War-era steam ships on Mare Island, and after the closure of the naval base were transformed in 1999 to art studios by the mobiliste sculptor Tim Rose, whose vision to establish working artist space has for nearly two decades enabled artists to develop their own vision, livelihood, and community interaction.
