Mark's Place opened for business in New Philadelphia in 1982. Mark was nineteen years old and new to town. With little experience and no clients, the opening year was tough. Having less than six months experience in other salons in Columbus and Coshocton, Mark had to make things up as things came along. In a few years Mark's Place had expanded to three locations. The multiple locations idea was later scrapped by selling the salon in Rocky River and combining the two local locations into one in 1989.
Mark's Place started expanding from hair services alone into nails and later cosmetics and skincare. By 1996 the salon had grown to 19 employees and the day spa industry was the rage in large metropolitan areas. After visiting several spas we came to believe that Tuscarawas County would support a spa too once they discovered all it had to offer. With most people thinking we had lost our minds, we built our current sixty four hundred square foot facility from the ground up. That was the easy part; we had to begin a hiring and training commitment that would take several years to develop the skilled staff necessary. This process has never ended, and we currently employ some of the most experienced and highly trained staff in the state. Most of our staff began their career at Mark's Place, a couple over 20 years ago, and we have begun to hire the second generation. We prefer to hire bright, talented, eager to learn staff that want to belong to a team that is committed to learning from one another and challenging one another to consistently deliver world class service to our guests.
Unlike many salons and spas that operate with commissioned employees that take ownership of clients like personal property, Mark's Place wants each guest to know that every service giver is available to them with never a guilt trip for taking advantage of the services of another service giver. Obviously we want every guest to have access to the service givers of their choice, but when schedules don't work, or you would simply like a change, the entire Mark's Place team is always available to you, guilt free!
