Founded by in Portland, OR to disperse Moorish teaching, heterodox Islamic dhikr, Drunk Sufis, general weirdness, folk magic, poetry readings, and bake off
Peace, Salaam, Islam!
Beginning in 2010 or 2011 or so, a young Muslim living in Oregon decided he wanted to found an institution around the people and things that influenced him.
Without a proper education in his fields the nucleus of Masjid No. 7l began to form.
Originally called the Green Rose Mosque and centering around the writing of Hakim Bey, Noble Drew Ali, Sufism, and Michael Muhammad Knight, it consisted solely of its founder.
The Green Rose Mosque operated in the same sense as the Moorish Orthodox Church of America. Eclectic, hard to pin down, with only a few shared currents running through.
In 2012, Turtle Bey decided to carry on this tradition by founding Masjid No. 7
The Masjid operates with no one fixed address, no supreme leader, no one to make arbitrary rules of submission. In this sense, Masjid No. 7 can be translated to Mosque of the Hidden (Inner) God.
Inherent in all of us. Let's celebrate!
With no fixed teachers or curriculum, Masjid No. 7 looks to be a meeting of the minds in the strange, bizarre, weird, occult, exciting, colorful, and enlightening.
We'd love to hear from you.
To Uplift Fallen Humanity.
