House of The Merciful
Masjidur-Rahim was once a shell of a building ravished by fire until a small group of Muslims set out to do the most difficult task of turning this dilapidated building into a house of worship.
Nestled right off Esplanade Avenue, about a mile away from the French Quarter, this residential neighborhood did not attract the attention of tourists, large businesses or developers. However, it did arouse the interest of a few good men and women who saw the potential in its decaying walls and shabby frame. The Believers saw this as an opportunity to construct a house of worship that the community needed. The Muslims needed a place to perform their daily prayers, congregate and celebrate together. The surrounding neighborhood also needed a group that cared and would be inclusive and not forget them. With much dedication, volunteers began the labor of love to build Masjidur-Rahim which has continued, with (G-ds) assistance to grow throughout the years. The masjid featured weekly nights where Believer’s would knock on the doors of local residents to invite and welcome them out to the masjid. The community soon recognized that the Muslims were pillars of peace and the mosque was a place of refuge. Oftentimes, residents would come out to Friday prayer and community activities and others would smile and wave as they passed on the way to their home.
To strive as in a race toward all that is good and pleasing to Allah (SWA) and join together with humanity in truth, patience and constancy.
