Back in town for a beautiful chicago weekend day. Spent the morning at East Bank Club: spin class, weight lifting, hot yoga class. Then, in the afternoon, I stopped by the co-working space for a little bit of work, followed by a relaxing outdoor hot tub and indoor sauna. EBC is the best club in Chicago
I will preface by saying I primarily go to the gym to lift free weights and use cardio machines. East Bank Club is my favorite gym I’ve ever belonged to and it’s not even close. The weight room here is fantastic, with a ton of platforms, racks, cable cross machines, and various other good stuff. I usually go in the morning to avoid the post-work rush and i rarely have to wait to use anything. EBC has made it a joy for me to come in and lift every morning. Then there are all the other offerings. The pool in the summer is my favorite hangout spot. The co-working area is basically equivalent to an added WeWork membership which would run you like $50 a month. They loan you free Hyperice massagers, they have great massage chairs, and they just added those full-leg compression massage things. Since I joined, EBC has added many new things to the weights area, which is a great sign that they are constantly trying to improve the facilities. I will note a couple of downsides. The class instructors have been hit-or-miss mostly miss in my experience which is OK because I don’t love classes. I wish I didn’t have to pay $24 each time to play pickleball - it should be more like $10. And the service at the rooftop Sundeck is also inconsistent. All in all I feel like I can never leave EBC, even though I’ve only gone for 4 months.
Most of the staff is great! The facility is great! The registration people are hit or miss. Some of them are great, and others are not so great. You never know if you are going to get a friendly response or a short, rude response to your question. This is not what you would expect from the frontline of the club. Unfortunately many of the older members also give the club a bad rep. They take over, move your stuff, and just expect everyone to get out of the way and let them be. When they go to the pool, they all grab at least 25 towels not an exaggeration and pile them all over their chair and reserve chairs up front for their friends. We had a similar experience playing pickle ball. The second level open play class folks only want to play with their friends and with those that have been playing for a while. If you aren't in their clique they ignore you or are rude to you. Not so much of the sportsmanlike conduct that helps people learn. They just want it to be their group and no one new can join. Overall, we like the club but it is a lot like a high school clique where the in crowd tries to rule.
Was a member at EBC for about a year but left to be somewhere closer to home. Overall this is an amazing facility and has anything you could think of spa, salon, weight rooms, food bar, tons of places to relax and study, etc.. I loved taking Pilates with Valerie and personal training with Predrag and Chris. The staff here is incredible. Respectfully, some areas could use some tweaking i.e. customer service. Like most places, there are the good and the bad, but it’s ultimately what you make of it. Highly recommend becoming a member here if you’re really into being active.
Love East Bank, but don't make the mistake of taking a Tennis class with "Michael Fox". Quite possibly the worst "coach/instructor" I've had after a literal lifetime of playing 5 or 6 different sports. Just one of those old bitter men that feels insecure if you look different than him and will subtly suggest you "try another sport" even though it's your first lesson ever. Just the worst type of human, luckily they've mostly thrown him to the shadow realm of friday night lessons so you won't have too much of a chance of running into him. All the other tennis instructors are great and actually know what they're talking about. This guy is a liability.
This gym is not the same as pre-pandemic. The number of classes offered has dramatically decreased by at least 50% and all the good instructor are gone. They started offering more classes that you pay extra for, which are no better than the regular classes. Also, most of those classes get cancelled 30 minutes for class starts. The food is terrible since the pandemic and with higher prices. The nail salon is out dated, boring colors, very old techs that can't do designs or the latest trends. The personal training is over priced. They have different levels of PT and tried both. There was no different in skill level but price were significantly more for the "higher level". I put my daughter in swim classes for toddlers and it was an extra charge which I understand but the instructors wasn't really teaching water safety or how to swim. I enrolled my child in a different school that is same price but focus of teaching kids how to swim and water safety. There are too many other options for gyms in this city for the same price. This gym is not what it used to be. I would not recommend. The only people that attend this gym are over 50.
I was not sure what to expect at the East Bank Club since it as a fitness facility. I thought .. a wedding reception at East Bank Club .. really? It was excellent!! They have a cute room next to the river and the cocktail hour is up on the roof/pool area with outstanding views of the city. Fun location and it works perfectly. Management keeps everything moving smoothly and the food is delicious!! Great place to have a reception and/or party. Ray – The Connexion Band
I have a lot of reasons that it makes sense for me to be a member here in addition to the fact that I live right across the street BUT their customer service is absolutely TERRIBLE. They don’t even try. I’ve wasted so much of my time speaking with different branches of their management and every single time I’m told that they will contact me and I never hear back from anyone. I know a few people that have had this same issue. I would expect them to at least get back to me about an issue that I’m having with billing. It makes me question how many other members here are being charged more than what they should be and just don’t realize it. I’ve given them SO many chances but at this point it’s humiliating and disrespectful so I’m cancelling my membership today and finding better service elsewhere. I’ve been a member for a few years now and it is hard to let go but id rather my money go somewhere that makes me feel like a valued member especially considering all of the money that I spend there OUTSIDE of just the monthly membership fee
I just rejoined after 5 years away. The workout area is incredible as always. What has impressed me the most honestly is the hustle and passion of the employees in the dining areas and overall. I was in the second floor dining area just ordering some lunch to go and the workers were borderline running through the kitchen trying to get everyone their food as quickly as possible while maintaining a friendly attitude and taking time to ask people how their day is going to build relationships with the members. Couldn’t be happier returning to the club.
