"In 1971, a small group of volunteers set out to rebuild the narrow gauge Sumpter Valley Railway in Eastern Oregon.Nearly all of today's excursion and museum railroads operate on abandoned rights-of-way. The Sumpter Valley Railway, located 22 miles southwest of Baker City Oregon, on U.S. Highway 7, has a unique characteristic over all of these railroads. We have built the railroad ourselves. Although the road bed and track is mostly on original Sumpter Valley Railway right-of-way, the original track was scrapped in 1947, and nearly all of the original road bed had eroded away. With an all volunteer work force, the SVRR has rebuilt over 5 miles of track, and is still planning to continuegrowing."

What a great way to see the fall colors! The 90 minute round trip ride plus a 45 minute stop in between made for a great afternoon outing. Just $25 per person! All staff loves their jobs and are all volunteers. Handicapped? They have a lift onto the train if needed. Be sure to bring a jacket for the cooler weather although the inside section of the train is heated with a pot belly stove. Remember these people are volunteers so bring a couple dollars cash for their efforts!
This is a roadside railroad attraction. It has a ton of parking and is located in a shallow, dusty valley near Sumpter, Oregon. They have a trio of Gazebos, a museum building and space for concession stands as well as very nice and well-kept bathrooms. The Depot also has a selection of rail cars and some antique mining steam engine equipment to look at as well. Finally, it's part of the steam railroad attraction, and this is the station for it.
Planned trip to visit, expecting to be open on a summer weekend, but was not. We've been here many years ago, also on a summer weekend, and the museum and train were operating and worth the visit, which is why the 2 star rating instead of 1 star rating.Visited onWeekendReservation recommendedNot sure
We typically ride the Sumpter Valley Rail at least once during the summer during flea market weekends If you have small children I would not recommend the train robbery rides as they act out robbing the train and fire blanks from their guns . This year we did the Christmas lights train ride, and it was fabulous! Bravo Sumpter for putting on a great little Christmas parade!
Loved thr experience. Different prices for steam and Diesel engines. Pay a little extra for the steam engine to get the full experienceVisited onWeekendWait time10–30 minReservation recommendedYesPrice for adult entry$31+
