In the past I've been very critical of the care given by this hospital and its staff. My husband was admitted a couple of days ago with Pneumonia and cardiac issues. What a difference! The staff has been incredibly kind, completely competent and I've been blown away with the care he is receiving. From the ER staff to the inpatient care they have been wonderful. Well done and thank you.
I want to give the surgery department, the highest level of praise for my care today and how they included my wife in my care from beginning to end. The hospital staff was very professional, personal and caring from registration to discharge. The entire staff of nurses, the orthopedic surgeon Dr. Joshua Anderson and the anesthesiologist team were amazing. I highly recommend this entire wonderful team!!!
I have visited McLaren 2 times in the past 5 months. The ER for an allergic reaction to a bee sting, and Cardiac ICU for 1 night of observation after a procedure. In both cases, I truly could not have been more impressed by the quality of care. Doctors, Nurse Practitioners, and Nurses were all “first-rate”, as were the patient rooms in the new Offield Family wing of the Hospital. We are very fortunate to have a Hospital of the caliber in Northern Michigan.
ER online check in appointments are not honored. More specifically, "They mean nothing." is what I was told when I arrived at the time I reserved 3 hours prior, glad to be able to wait in the comfort of my home instead of the freezing waiting room. Had a visit several weeks ago and was seen pretty quickly, but the ER "doctor" just paced around looking for something, what that was is entirely unclear because no instruments or tools were used on me the entirety of my less than 3 minute visit with the "doctor". Moreover, the employees are extremely underpaid and overworked - blame who you want for a worker shortage but do YOU want to be cared for by people paid less than a fast food employee? I don't.
The merit of all the negative reviews remains to be seen. It might be because the service really was very poor, or it might have been the overworking, overcrowding, and understaffing, that all healthcare is going through right now, and the ER takes the brunt of it. I had a positive experience because my husband and I went for abdominal pain at around 11 PM on a Thursday night, so they weren’t rushed and packed, but registration, triage nurse, doctor, RN, and CT technician were all courteous to me and listened well to my story and symptoms. They explained what the options were and eventually what they found and started me on an antibiotic. I was there until 3:30 or 4:00, so it wasn’t a short visit, but it was pretty good for an ER visit! The only reason why it isn’t five stars is because I asked for another prescription to help with antibiotic side effects and the doctor agreed, but it got lost in the shuffle and I never received the script. But my primary care has since helped me out so it’s fine. I left my phone on my gurney because I was so exhausted and confused and when I came back the triage nurse went back to my room and found it for me. : So there are some good folks working there!
Almost all staff is friendly. They are just trying to do the best they can. Short staffed I'm sure. But omg such a long wait in the ER. The sign says top 100 hospitals, why? Because the kids unit is freshly painted and new furniture?
Experiences varied from visit to visit. Latest was the worst. 36 hour visit. From the start had to track when any meds were administered. What type, how much, how often. Never told this info. Then had to request each med or they'd be a minimum of 2 hours late. Never offered any meals. NPO for much of it but once off, never told a menu, who or where to call. Never offered hygiene items like Toothpaste or toothbrush as I was admitted from ER initial 3hr wait. Was finally told that after my last set of labs and imaging I was set to go home. The hospitalist decided to over ride that docs order and wanted to keep me another night. Basically to defraud the insurance company an extra nights stay to pay the hospital more free money. I don't like giving bad reviews and feel very compelled to explain myself when I do. I have great respect for Healthcare community but this hospital is in bad shape.
While it was a long day in the Emergency Room, staff was helpful, kind and supportive. From the front desk to discharge we were treated very well. Dr. Artz was very thorough and provided updates as test results were processed. Thank you.
Dr. Allum doesn't listen to his patients and walks out on them if you disagree. He is extremely disrespectful to his patients and it would seem that he likes to talk down to women or young people. He never disrespected my husband. Every time I went there it was a fight because he cuts you off and doesn't listen at all. I think that McClaren should cut ties with this Dr.
The staff, nurses, and doctors that took care of my needs while in the emergency room were exceptional. I will always remember the care and compassion that I received while under their care. Thanks
